1000D vs. D3000 for newbie

I wouldn't trust any store who plays off having the same name as a true icon of the photography world.
There is one B&H Photo and it's in NYC.

Do you purchase using a MyUS account, or do they ship to SA?
Image stabilisation is important yes. But it is a function of the lens. You'll get stabilisation for both models.
I know B&H ships directly to SA. Not sure about Adorama.

I compared the entry level Canon and Nikons and I chose the Nikon... to me the build quality and feel was better... the Canon felt a bit "plastic".... this is just my opinion though 
I wouldn't be too worried about having VR on the 18-55mm lens - generally in low light you'll be using a tripod or flash anyway.

The problem is, is that the VR lens is expensive. It's like ~ R1700.
If I get the non-VR bundle at R4999, and later decide to get a VR lens, the cost could escalate quite quickly.
I might aswell fork out ~R7200 for a 450D with a VR lens, then. (which is waaay more than my budget)

It's unlikely you'll be wanting an 18-55 VR when you have an 18-55.

I agree 100%... For long telephoto lenses (say the 55-200mm) VR is useful... but I really wouldn't worry about VR for the 18-55mm

If I was starting out I'd get the 450D and the 50mm f/1.8 and learn how to use them. f/1.8 is a lesson in photography all in itself.
iDenTiTy, have a look at Game. 450D twin kit lenses for less than R7,000.
I spent some time with my 50mm f/1.8 last night. You're right, what a great experience! Really allows you to focus (no pun intended) on aperture/shutter speed/DoF without the distraction of zooming (it distracts me in any event
