Germany, Britain, France, Norway. Russia... all have very low cost internets. All of these countries use multiple expensive undersea cable connections to connect to Asia, North and South America.

Look at pricing in Australia, New Zealand, India... all of these countries have undersea links. Our prices are the highest in the world. We are being ripped and teh only way to force the corporations to quit being greedy is to lower demand through boycotts of over priced telecomms products. We can go further - have a national week long strike of EVERY SINGLE WORKING person to protest against over priced telecomms and on those days parade and chant and dance and wave protest banners in every major city.

Why should we pay fixed line costs? 3G utilises towers - do we pay for those towers through a separate monthly fee - NO! The upkeep of the infrastructure is THEIR overhead which must be paid for out of their profits. It is not an opportunity for them to profit from us more - it is an expense for them to fully bear themselves!

I don't Vodacom so OOB shark doesn't feed on me. I make use of 8ta, Cell C and now Afrihost promotional data bundles only. But I'm still paying R1000 per month to use about 60GB of data! This is total BS!

I would be prepared to pay R250 for 300GB per month at LTE speeds and I would still be paying more than in Europe!

But this is a fantasy in Seth Afrikkkkka.

And btw. the auction of airwaves for billions is also total BS. It's just the government sticking its finger up our asses and grabbing our colons and ripping out our guts so they can buy themselves mansions and yachts.

Radio spectrum is a free resource which should be allocated for free as needed to all those providing a telecomms service.

So far you have listed countries that host multiple global internet exchanges. Other countries pay to connect to them, and they more or less only have to worry about the capital investment for the local infrastructure.

No, Asia and South America connect to *these* countries. Transatlantic cables serve to connect like 500 million people to each other, where large portions of the African undersea cables to us serve about 10 million people.

How much do you pay a maid in Europe? What about a gardener, or a garden service? Why is this relevant? Unfortunately, due to our economic situation, minimum wages here are too low for the majority of the population to pay for the services they use, so this stupid middle class you keep referring to subsidises a lot of the rest of the population. To fix this, minimum wages will need to increase, while decreasing the tax (and other infrastructure subsidy) burden is reduces, hopefully to the point where a minimum wage worker can afford to support the full costs of their dependants, and hopefully have enough left to have something to invest in their (and their kids) future. That might include having internet access.

Hmm, Radio spectrum is a finite resource, and licences in SA make up a very small portion of the costs associated with delivering a service.

What would reduce costs is kicking analog TV off spectrum that could be used for LTE, which would allow greater coverage without increasing tower density. If some small license fees (held in escrow until the migration is finished) would help ICASA finish the migration to digital, I am sure all the players would be willing to pay.

As far as SA wages go, we are paying our workers too little. When CEOs take home R45 million per annum and workers get R5000 per month, there is something wrong. The CEO doesn't need more than R250 000 per month (R3 million pa) to live a life of luxury and excess that 99% of the readers of this web site will ever lead (and we are rich by comparison to many). I cannot think how to justify a salary of almost R4 million per month. What do you do for that? **** gold bricks?

The entire management heirarchy of mining companies (and other corporates) needs to be shaken hard so that the money stops collecting and being hoarded by the top echelon but more of it filters down to the impoverished bottom level workers whose increased spending would invigorate our economy.

I have become more of a communist / socialist over the years. When I was young I thought capitalism was awesome, but now I see how it destroys the lives of the poor and for what - so the wealthy can hoard money. It doesn't make any sense any more. If we have to introduce salary quotas for every level of worker in a company to increase the fairness of distribution of equity amongst everyone in an organisation, then so be it. There has proved to be no such thing as "pure capitalism" because whenever we allow the capitalists to do whatever they like, they grab it all and oppress the rest. They enslave us with their hoarding of the means of economic exchange.

Want to increase participation in the economy? Empower more of those who participate in the economy by giving them a much larger share of the pie. 90% of the workers must get 90% of the profits, not 10% getting 90%. This is what is messing things up.

and yes, you are correct the radio spectrum is a finite resource which means that we don't just give it out indiscriminately, but we also don't need to charge for doing so. Did we create it? It simply exists, like the oceans for our use. Do we charge for the air we breathe. No, but give capitalists a chance, and they will... one day, when the capitalists have polluted the environment by their don't give a damn business pracices, and the air is no longer fit to breathe, they will charge us for fresh air, even though they are the ones who messed it up in the first place.

Capitalism is not necessary. It is an evil.

Life doesn't work that way. Your salary is relative to your value. A CEO that is successful and bringing in billions for shareholders is entitled to a small cut of the profit because such people are very valuable and must be encouraged to stay. Uneducated workers at the bottom can easily be replaced and have little value, and earn accordingly. They're an expense item, not shareholders. No one would start a business if they had to give most of their money away, or they'd buy robots to do the work of humans.

LOL. No, your salary is as low as they can get away with. Have you ever complained bitterly about your salary? Try it. You will be surprised to discover that they can afford to give you another R10K a month and be willing to give it too.

But most people just accept what they are paid.

This is why unions are formed to force people like you at the point of a gun to change your minds. Then you change your minds, when all that you have is threatened. Sometimes that is the only way.

You don't come across as an atheist at all. And I never said you worked for me, only what I'd do if you did. You're not addressing the main point I made earlier: why would anyone start a business if they had to pay the employees as if they were shareholders?
