There has to be a catch somewhere in that deal because it's too good to be true.

The catch is in the MATHS. Do da maths.

7 hours per day * 30 days = 210 hours. In order to do 1TB of traffic, your connection must be able to handle 5GB of taffic per hour.

Most connections struggle to do 1GB per hour, i.e. 20%. So 20% of 1024GB works out to be only 200GB per month.

It's still a good deal, PROVIDED you can get 1GB down per hour, but if not, then not so much.

But the bottom line is that the 1TB being held out is a myth unless you have a magically fast connection.

The cost of data in Germany has nothing to do with the cost of data in SA, and this temporary Cybersmart deal only shows that the network has a lot of spare capacity from midnight until the early morning. You must be joking if you think we should all cancel our DSL connections and twiddle our thumbs until Telkom changes something.

I suggest that ALL ADSL users cancel and adopt 3G, LTE and Wifi until Telkom sees sense.

Any debate over LLU, fixed line costs etc. will be absolutely moot if they are losing customers by the thousands every month and they are in the RED.

Only then will Telkom abandon their stalling tactics and fall over themselves to make special offers to woo customers back.

You are paying for bundled telephone lines and fixed monthly costs because you ACCEPT THEIR OFFER and pay them.

Except it will make absolutely no difference to Telkom if I cancel my ADSL - I'll just be very unhappy.

As for thresholds, I can download whatever I want on my 4Mbps Afrihost business account. I'll stress about throttling when I have a 20 or 40Mbps account.

Hi, i used to live in Germany and I absolutely agree with you that what you are suggesting can be done and has been done before by Germans. Unfortunately what you forgetting is that now we are in SA and for some unknown to me reason as well, but people here are not prepared to stand up and do it. Just check how much they have been charged for DSTV and they still keep paying for it. I'm paying 10 euro a month to watch much much better content with much more TV channels. If i was leaving in Bulgaria i would probably pay even little bit less, but because it is an IP TV this is what i'm paying currently. Also they have not been any increases for the last 3-4 years and when they started they had like 60 channels, currently are around 200 and kept the price the same. No one things this is something extraordinary. Just check the prices on electronics. Do you think if people started buying their stuff from oversees, they will keep those prices? Probably not, but why to decrease if most of them are happy buying. Just looked the other day a 70" Sony TV in USA $2000 in SA R.40000. TIA you know.

If you insist on a physical connection, check out Neotel's fibre links.

You don't use an infinite amount of bandwidth, so you don't need an uncapped solution. All you need to do is determine your average usage and buy your bandwidth in bulk. There are plenty of good value 3G offers.

My household uses at least 350GB every month. That's costing R897pm incl. line rental and is unshaped. I have no idea where I could get similar value for money outside of DSL. If you know, then I'm all ears. Somehow I don't see 3G or Neotel internet being able to match R2.56/GB.

In your case, I suggest you pack your household up and go and live in Germany because you are classed as an "abusive user" in Seth Efrikkka by most uncapped services and subject to throttling at any time.

I'm on Afrihost business. There is no shaping and no throttling. My usage is below the limit in the throttling policy that they used to have though, so I doubt I'm going to receive a letter any time soon. Afrihost even maintains leaderboards for the heaviest users, so it's almost like they encourage extreme line utilisation.

If I'm going to emigrate, it will be to Toronto or Hong Kong (1Gbps would be nice in HK), and not just to escape Telkom. I'm content with living in SA for now. I'm more concerned with the cost of electricity than internet here.

Germany is much closer to the 'internet'. Getting a fibre to a major internet exchange doesn't require a submarine cable and huge investments.

3G users are not offered differing speeds. We don't pay fixed monthly fees. We pay only for the data we consume. There is absolutely no reason why this pricing model should not also apply to ADSL.
