The Beetle is their best selling car and it’s still trash. The Mk 4 Golf might not be the worst VW, but it definitely is the worst Golf.

I drive a 2011 Hyundai i30 and I am very happy with it. It's nothing fancy and I guess it an 'honest' car with no pretenses or airs about it.

I've driven the i20 before and it is quite a bit more nippy than the i30 due to it being less heavy, but the 1.6 motors aren't known for their outright power. They output around 90kw at the crank, but the power delivery means you need to rev it to get it going. It will be even worse if you are up in the highveld.

Can't you find a nice 1.9Tdi Golf in your price range? Economy and torque is a lot better than in the naturally aspirated petrol model, and the engines are tough as nails and the turbo's are cheap to replace.

If we are including the Citi Golf, then I think it takes the cake for the worst Golf hands down

WHat is the criteria you base your opinion on?

What do you think makes a "good" car?

And also why do you think your opinion is relevant?

@eg2505 THIS! is what i was trying to tell you about these small engines, you have to abuse it to get it going..... thats its downfall..... did you manage to get a second opinion on a diagnostics report? ive been meaning to ask you

Hmm the beetle is only the 4th best selling car of all time, yea they must definitely be trash........
 
Get a Polo Vivo, something less than 10 years old with less than 100k km.

The leather interior and drive of that Mk4 Golf might be nice, but those 2 litre Golfs are nice and heavy on fuel, compared to other hatchbacks. You are going to struggle with parts.

Why is it that dealers only sell cars driven previously by old ladies?

The MkIII Golf was a lot worse than the MkIV, mostly due to it's weight that not even an ABF or VR6 could over come in any meaningful fashion. And I wholeheartedly disagree that the Beetle is trash.

Why do you say this? Most parts should be available from any Goldwagen, mechanical parts anyway.

I have two other options though, A 2007 VW Polo with 98000km on the clock (guy says he bought it from a granny who parked the car for about four years, I believe him) and the guy is asking for 70000, no Service History, guy says he will get it from the lady though. Another car is a Hyundai i20 2010 with 174000 on the clock, one owner with full-service history from Hyundai, asking for 80000.

Just remember Hyundai spares are not cheap. Nice cars but not budget friendly when it comes to maintenance. My mom has a the 1.6 Getz, 1 water pipe was R1000 and the motor had to be redone at 100k but that could have been poor maintenance from previous owner, not sure if the car had service history

Shop around a bit more, do a bit more research. If a dealer/person swears the car has a full service history at the dealer, verify this at the dealer. Check consumption on car's computer (if equipped) while driving. It's hard to tick all of the boxes, and things can still go wrong even when you do. I wouldn't restrict myself to 3 completely different cars, test drive different variants of the same car if possible.
 
A family member of mine just bought a 2004 Dihatsu Sirion auto with 140K on the clock for R70K! o_O

Needless to say it broke down in Berea after 2 days of ownership. Been fighting so hard with myself not to dance around said family member singing "I told you so, I told you so!"
