Hyundai has added two turbodiesels to the existing five petrol variants in its new Tucson SUV range, released in South Africa in March 2016.
The first is a value-for-money offering with a new 1.7-litre engine and manual 'box, trimmed to the middle-level range Executive specification level, while the other has a brawny two-litre and a automatic transmission, and comes with all the bells and whistle of the upmarket Elite trim.
The all-new 1.7-litre UII engine is built at Hyundai's plant in the Czech Republic, and is Euro 6 compliant thanks to an improved 2000 bar high pressure fuel-injection system, and exhaust gas recirculation system and a Lean NOx Trap catalytic converter. It's rated for 85kW at 4000 revs and 280Nm from 1250-2750rpm, and drives the front wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox. Fuel-consumption on the NEDC combined cycles is quoted at 6.8 litres per 100km.
The R2.0 engine, on the other hand, is home-grown in Korea, delivering a claimed 131kW at 4000 revs, with peak torque of 400Nm from 1750-2750 r/min. A six-speed automatic transmission transfers power to the front wheels.
Both turbodiesel derivatives come with all-black interior trim, including power-adjustable leather seats, a leather-covered multifunction steering wheel, dual-zone automatic climate control, air vents for rear passengers, glove box cooling, cruise control and a rear-view camera with display in the rear view mirror.
