2018 Ford EcoSport (Facelift)

The problem I have with the Titanium and Trend, no N/A 1.5 engine,
Most manufactures are going the small engine with turbo route, the turbo makes it more efficient so you dont have to ring the engine for the power but there are some camps that say turbo engines gives you more problems which from personal experience I owned 4 turbos cars never had any issues turbo related.

The Ford 1 litre turbo engine is a great engine with plenty of power (Have driven in an Ecosport Titanium) BUT.... I have first hand feedback from several owners who have had to get a new engine because the 1 litre turbo failed.

As the the 1.5 non-turbo engine in the Ecosport - I have never heard of 1 issue. Not one.

Considering I have matured from swapping cars every 2-3 years, to now owning a 6 year old Ecosport, reliability is very NB and a n/a engine will often trump a turbo.

I had no idea that these engines gave up

I had a Ford Fiesta 1.0 powershift titanium, I serviced it on time annual if I didnt get the miles. The only reason i got rid of it was the Powershift Gearbox TCM packed up on me , Yes ford did replace it under the recall but I think it was too late cause to me it felt like alot more things needed to be done after the TCM failure like the clutches and actuators as the car didnt feel the same.

How long have you kept them and were they small (1.2 or smaller) engines with turbos or larger engines with turbos? If I were to by a new EcoSport I'd keep it at least 10 years.

This guy has bad luck with his EcoSports engine:

GolF 7 GTI from brand new drove it until 38 000KM ( VW messed up the PDI left the elivery blocks in placed messed the suspension up )
Golf 6 GTI got it from 32 000Km now on 110 000Km ( never had any issues with this car normal service, brakes tyres, battery and just last month did the timing chain gasket which was very cheap)
Ford Fiesta 1.0t from Brand new drove it up to 86 000Km ( sold it because of the TCM failure on the powershift)
Currently Audi A6 3.0 V6 got it at 120 000Km currently at 123 000Km too soon to say but its on a 2 year Freeway warranty, this is the car I plan on keeping for the next 5 to 7 years.

Going to chip in here....

As the owner of a 6yo Ecosport, I can honestly say this full maintenance plan deal isn't much of a carrot compared to the standard 4yr warranty and service plan our Ecosport came with.

In the first 4 years the only things that service/warranty did not cover were a set of wiper blades, a front brake clean to stop low speed dust noises (came right by itself) and noisy front shocks (they are still 100%, just a light thump over some speed bumps if too aggressive). I paid for the wipers but refused on the other 2.

Bottom line, it's a nice to have, but probably won't offer buyers much more during the first 4yrs/60k of ownership.

Even the Ambiente petrol will now set one back R6500pm :(
Car prices are insane. Our 6yo Ambiente has just over 60k on the clock and is paid off. It also has extended factory warranty until Feb next year.

2-3 years ago I would have replaced the car by now, but I just cannot justify the replacement cost and associated installment now - would far rather plow that money into our bond every month, which is what I am doing.

you can pick up something decent on the certified pre owned market at the monthly cost and add a warranty - let the first owner take the depreciation.

DRIVEN: Ford EcoSport 1,5 Ambiente Black auto

Overall

With its nimble chassis and a welcome dose of visual attitude in the shape of the Black treatment, there’s lots to like about the EcoSport. Granted, rivals such as the Kia Sonet and Nissan Magnite are more generously equipped (bear in mind that Ambiente spec only provides a fairly basic infotainment system, while the likes of cruise control, keyless entry and ignition, leather trim for the steering wheel – a surprisingly effective ambience-lifter compared to the Ford’s urethane item – are the preserve of higher-tiered models) and cheaper but can’t quite match the EcoSport’s on-road poise and generously proportioned boot and cabin. The Black will no doubt do its job of revitalizing the line-up of a crossover that’s fast approaching its tenth birthday, but the competition is getting stronger…as is the case for the funky-looking Puma, upon which Ford Motor Company South Africa has yet to make a call.

Does it come with Level 1 BBBEE certification for tender winning ability?

Ignition GT review of the EcoSport 1,5 Ambiente Black

Honestly, that radio display is a joke in 2021. Picanto's come with better spec!

Just the other day I commented to someone how our 2015 Ecosport Ambiente lacked usb ports. Ford was and still is mean AF with the entry level Ecosport spec

In my opinion there isn't enough of a compelling reason why someone should buy this over the Nissan Magnite, Kia Sonet, Honda WRV and the Suzuki Vitara Brezza/Toyota Urban Cruiser.

Sure the drivetrain may be better in the Ford but from a value point, there are more affordable, better equipped vehicles.

This sums up ford at the moment. I'm still amazed they refuse to bring the Puma and the new Escape to SA.

DRIVEN: 2021 Ford EcoSport Black offers loads of character and capability

With 333 litres of boot space on offer, enough space for five adults or two adults and two kids in child seats, the EcoSport Black really is a compelling vehicle in the highly popular compact crossover segment. It has been with us for a while now, but Ford has been constantly refining it to ensure it keeps up with the likes of the KIA Sonets of this world. I found the EcoSport Black to offer decent ground clearance for driving on dirt roads in game parks and on plots, and getting in and out of the car is also a cinch thanks to wide door apertures. The side-hinged tailgate took some getting used to for me, and it might be a slight challenge for you depending on your garage or parking situation but it isn't a deal breaker. If I were in the market for something in the compact crossover segment I would rate the EcoSport Black very high on my 'want' list, but there is tough competition from that aforementioned KIA Sonet and other vehicles from Hyundai and Suzuki and Toyota.

Currently priced at around R340 000 the Ford Ecosport Black comes with a four-year/120 000km warranty, a four-year/60 000km Service Plan, three year's worth of Road Side Assistance and a five-year anti-corrosion warranty. The only option that you can get from the factory on an EcoSport Black is Metallic Paint. Contact your nearest Ford dealer for pricing and availability.

Ford EcoSport Black (2021) Launch Review

How much does the Ford EcoSport cost in South Africa?

The Ford EcoSport range kicks off at R303 900 and this Black derivative costs R337 400. The 1.0-litre turbo engine range comes with more standard specification and starts from R346 000.

A 4-year/120 000 km warranty, 3-year/unlimited-km roadside assistance and 5-year/unlimited-km corrosion warranty. A 4-year/60 000 km service plan is included, with intervals every 15 000 km.

Summary

There seems no end in sight to the expansion of the compact family car segment. Considering that Ford has managed to keep its EcoSport fresh and specified in line with customer expectations. The Blue Oval is well aware that new offerings from Kia (Sonet), Nissan (Magnite), Suzuki/Toyota (Vitara Brezza/Urban Cruiser, Honda (WR-V) and Haval (Jolion) all want a slice of the segment leader’s share.

The Ford EcoSport does show its age in some ways (it’s been in Mzansi since 2013) and, given the stiff competition in this segment, customers are spoilt for choice. That said, the EcoSport does blend the roles of urban runabout and gravel cruiser rather well. Despite some cheap-feeling finishes, it feels like it can handle rough roads (mechanically speaking) and its packaging makes quite a visual statement.
