Office pool is to win RWC is:

1x Wales
2x South Africa
3x New Zealand
1x England

...and they're all in the quarter finals but none of them are playing each other. Imagine they all lose this weekend :ROFL:
Then my money would be on Japan I think

Ireland vs New Zealand isn't that clear cut. Ireland have won 2 from the last 3 and if Ireland keep the ball they have a good chance. They have a strong enough defence, but they won't hold out NZ for ever if they kick too much.

England
NZ
Wales
Boks

I have no real idea about England vs Aus. Aus has been the most inconsistent team for me, but on a good day they can run circles around anyone.

When will the officials be announced. Wales, the lucky bastards, are at least assured of avoiding a French ref. World Rugby just loves giving us Poite every opptunity they can

My prediction for officials for our QF match:
Referee - Poite
Assistant 1 - Gaüzère
Assistant 2 - Raynal
TMO - Garcès

Edit: Above is tongue in cheek of course

If we're in the finals vs NZ then the chances are it will be a French ref.

Other than the 4 frenchies, it's just:
Owens (ref'd last final)
Barnes (possibly retiring, so maybe he gets it)
Pearce (too inexperienced)
Gardner (has had a few blunders recently)
Berry (too inexperienced)

This Japanese Rugby World Cup result by Japan may change some things within the union, or the power the tier 1, exercises. Japan is already busy starting a second league, one above the Top League, which will have international participants. This result may lure in Japanese, Northern and Southern Hemisphere as well as other places Asia, enterprises or other parties, as stakeholders.

Something gives me an idea, that Japan going through to the quarters have kickstarted the Asian rugby market. This may very well also accelerate the tier 2 nations who may participate therein, but it may also place pressure on the Six Nations and the Rugby Championship as well as the top 14 and Super Rugby competitions as broadcasters may now have more opportunities.

In order to turn this around, I believe Japan, and or the Sunwolves, may be invited into (or maybe back) into a current competition. The Southern Hemisphere will have to invite Japan onto the SANZAAR board… which Japan maybe won’t accept since a certain union blocked them out, so negotiations are probably already happening. This doesn’t mean that the Sunwolves will go back to Super Rugby in 2021 as I am sure they will play in the new competition Japan is establishing, but that Japan may get onboard with the Rugby Championship. Europe will look at, maybe, getting teams in the new Japanese competition. I believe things like these are happening.

Many are calling this the worst Rugby World Cup in history, due to the match cancellation and the non-existent contingency plan, but this may be the World Cup which will bring in the most money and opportunities to develop the sport globally which will accelerate the growth which is needed for the global game for the next 8 years for emerging more nations. The more nations emerging, the better the sport will be funded.

To be honest, though, there are tier 1 nations who treat rugby as an elitist sport, and this should change. I also don't hope that if Japan is taking a position amongst these nations that they themselves don't get consumed in elitism. Japan has money, it is their rugby union who is without money.

I feel it would be great to include Japan in the rugby championship, it'd be good for the competition too. Geographically it kinda makes sense, more so than then playing 6 nations. SA would get shafted with travel but it'd be worth it.

Bad news for Ireland

Ireland's Aki to miss rest of World Cup as red card is upheld

Ireland centre Bundee Aki will miss the remainder of the Rugby World Cup after an independent judicial committee on Monday upheld the red card he picked up in their 47-5 victory over Samoa on Saturday.

Aki was sent off in the 29th minute following a high tackle on Samoa flyhalf Ulupano Seuteni at Fukuoka Hakatanomori Stadium as Ireland reached the quarterfinals.

The 29-year-old had hoped to overturn the red card in a bid to prolong his tournament.

However, the judicial committee at a disciplinary hearing in Tokyo did not find that referee Nic Berry's decision was wrong.

World Rugby's mandatory minimum mid-range entry point for a suspension is six weeks but Aki's good disciplinary record had resulted in a reduced sanction of three weeks, the committee said in a statement https://www.rugbyworldcup.com/news/513551.

As a result, Aki will miss Ireland's last-eight clash against defending champions New Zealand on October 19 as well as the semifinal and the final should his team progress.

If Ireland are knocked out, he will serve the remainder of his ban with club side Connacht Rugby in the PRO14.
