Just got my 4S a couple of days ago, I had the same problem with my iphone 3GS and subsequently switched to blackberry because of it..

Anyway I was hoping the issue had been resolved but it seems not.

Yesterday I bought a 10mb data bundle (late afternoon) just to test, I have been at home using wifi since purchasing the bundle.

Around 6am this morning I got an sms saying my data bundle had been used up..

I checked my billing on vodacom and since then a R84 worth of data has been used! I've been at home on wifi the whole time (except when the phone sleeps i assume)

iCloud disabled (never setup) and some apps have push enabled.

Any ideas?

I really don't want to have to disable data/3g etc and toggle it everytime i use it.. that is juts a pain in the ass.. if i can't get it sorted in a couple days.. iphone 4s going cheap! :P

One of the culprits to check out

Location Services

General - Settings - Location Services - will show you which apps are using this function

ok.. location services off, most push notifications off.. phone lying idle has used over 4MB in the last hour or so…

this really sucks :-(

My wife has the same issue on her 4s. Spent about R150 this week alone, because data seems to be mysteriously disappearing. Location services are off as well as Siri.

Could be diagnostic reports being sent to apple? I turned that **** off. Haven't had any mysterious data usage (I'm not on a data plan at the moment, only kicks in next month, got the 4S 2 weeks ago)

Apparently the wifi closes when your phone locks/sleeps (which is debatable since then I'd be using data). Are their any mail accounts that are being checked on the phone?

The general consensus is: An open app (usually a game) that isn't closed using data and "Find my friends" (whatever that is). Closing down any apps after you've used them (home button once. double home button, and you'll see open apps. You close them the same way you'll delete an app or move the icon around)

i switched off diagnostic reports. what sucks is having to constantly monitor the phone, close apps, switch services on and off for fear it's sucking the life out of your bank account..

mail push off, siri off, location off, notifications off..

i have basically disabled everything now which kinda defeats the purpose of having those features in the first place.

We do close any open apps, so it can't be that. Diagnostics was turned off the moment we switched the iPhone on. She is also not on a data plan yet - also got her phone a few weeks ago and the data bundle only kicks in on Feb 1. There is an email account but I think this data has been going since before she set up the email account.

did some googling etc, seems this problem is epidemic with no fix.. gonna see if voda will let me swap the phone for something else, only had it a couple of days.

one other weird thing i noticed, using the phone with wifi on, while actually using it with full wifi signal (so it had not fallen back to cellular) the cellular usage counter was going up! So it's actually using cellular data even on wifi!

Wish I had an answer for you but clearly something not right
My wife has the 4s and will be carrying over >450mb this month on a 500mb package!!??

Again, I do not have the problem. Try resetting it to factory defaults and check. It could be a phone that was returned. Also, check what apps she has on the phone (women love their games). As far as I can see it's usually attributed to an app maker. Some applications need to be "told" not to use 3G but the wifi (but this is on a nokia I setup for my sister)

Just reloaded R29 airtime earlier and it literally got used up in a few minutes. She checked Facebook and went onto google to check something. It's ridiculous. It's a brand new phone, AcidRazor, Vodacom delivered it to our door in the courier packaging and it was sealed.

Really do not know why it would then. Instead of loading R29 voucher, try to load a data bundle (you can purchase it like prepaid much like the sms bundles). I bought my phone via MTN so they might have different settings on the phones?

Someone suggested to check if your wireless asks you to join the network each time (which you can turn off so it joins the network without asking)

Here might be some more tips (it's aimed at battery life but it might use data as well): http://osxdaily.com/2011/10/16/ios-5-battery-life-fix-tips/

I actually told her earlier to rather load a data bundle. The wireless doesn't ask each time. It just connects when she's nearby. I'll take a look at that link now. Thanks.

I've tried all the tips, nothing works except for actually switching off cellular data. There's a 108 page thread about this on apple support, and that's just one of many. Doesn't affect everyone but (most of) those who have it can't find a fix.
