4S mysterious data usage

Hey [)roi(]

thanks for the assist.

An update, after leaving your place and driving home, not having touched the phone, Data counter is up to 210kb! 86/124
Pleasure.

I am particularly interested to know what happens overnight (whilst you sleep) i.e. what data movement occurs when the device is completely stationary. The part that still concerns me is from your screenshots, which appears to indicate a WIFI signal issue (i.e. constant switch out between WIFI and cellular -- I wonder if this could be contributing to some of the traffic)

I have looked at the logs and I can't find anything untoward; except I think I may have discovered the cause of your system preference crashes (appears to be JB related).

Anyway I'll chat again tomorrow for an update on the overnight usage -- hopefully the upgrade shows some improvement.

Hi assagai,
Please can you check one more thing for me i.e. whether MMS Messaging is active (Settings, Messages, MMS Messaging) -- mine btw is off re never see the value of MMS with email, WhatsApp and now iMessage.

Interesting, the system pref crashes were happening after the restore.. i didn't JB again.

I've left the phone in a part of the house where wifi signal is at full so should give a better reflection of cellular usage.
While lying there usage has gone up another 100k or so.

MMS was on, just switched it off.

Mmmhhh strange re system prefs -- the component that was crashing was a JB mod??

The 100k part is not the concern -- if we start hitting Mbs again then there is definite room for concern. Guess we'll know by tomorrow.

yes very strange.. is it possible old logs were left on the device after restore?

As of this morning:

sent: 459 kb
received: 717kb

so over 1mb of data used in about 12-13 hours.

Not as bad as before, but still quite worrying, at this rate I'd need a 60mb bundle just for unexplained usage.

Was this just for the time the phone was left unattended or does it also include the time since we reset the counters. I.e. I'd like to isolate what the phone does on it's own without any user interaction.

I am concerned about your results as my phone clearly shows no progression on the counters whilst I am sleeping. I.e. since the 28th midnight, I have sent 218kb and received 260kb

This was from when I left your house til this morning.

However after leaving the house for about 30 mins today (not using the phone, no email checking or browsing etc) usage has increased drastically:

sent: 641kb

Received: 2,8MB

on a side note, the system pref crashing has persisted into 5.1

I'm wondering now if the actual phone isn't faulty. I'm still in the 7 day obf period so maybe I should return it.

No harm in return in returning the phone, overseas this is a common practice. The System Preference crashes are very strange -- definitely not something affecting me.

What I'd also suggest is that if you take the phone back for replacement that aside from challenging them on the preferences crashing, you also make the excessive data usage their issue to explain...

i just found under "settings" there is a "store" button (for app store) under there you can opt to automatically download your apps across all your devices and an optional box to turn on "use cellular network" for the downloads. check to see if that might be turned on

On assagai's phone we have already checked this -- i.e. was disabled -- have pretty much covered all the basics, including looking at the logs -- with similar active settings to mine it's confusing to see the cellular data usage increase without any apparent cause.

Are you on the same networks?

assagai did you get the phone swapped out? any better or worse now? i am curious cause this could be a worrying problem, although mine is not leaking any data from what i've seen.

They wouldn't swap it out.. was told I'd I'd have to send it in and wait 7 days.. so I decided to keep it.

Still eating data like crazy.. but I'm starting to think it's an ISP/Voda thing.

It's NOT siri, location, apps or any of the common causes of data consumption.. and the only way to stop it is to turn off cellular data which is what I do now.. not much of a fix.

I also suspect it has to be something about your account; my usage is non existent when on WIFI and reasonably low when only on cellular.

The beta that you have allows you to disable 3G, try that and see if it makes any difference. Aside from swapping phones with you for a few days I can't think of anything else to suggest.

Also I have not heard from anyone else with a similar issue, so it would be difficult to log this as a possible bug with Apple.

still hogging data but I installed a neat app called onavo that compresses cellular data. I was surprised that it actually works, brought my usage down nearly 50%. Definitely worth a look.
