5850 price drop!!!

Pffft... Im just gonna buy one(5850) in London in December. Hope the prices are a bit lower then - 150 pounds hopefully :)

Can you believe suppliers in SA has the nerve to ask us as retaillers R3999.00 for a 5870 cost excl. You must remember the R3000 odd at Newegg is the shop pricing for customers. So the supplier buys it even for less and charge us the mad prices in SA.

I have been in the PC business for 18 years and is so fed up with the suppliers. We as retaill shops, work with a 10 - 15% markup and we suffer. Could someone from the suppliers/importers please explain their pricing structure to us?

Import tax is apparently way higher on recently released items...

Import tax does not very on the release date of the item.

An item is marked as a certain type of good and gets that import tax applied to it.
IIRC computer components have at MOST 10% import tax.... but i actually think its much less than that.

Its a given that the suppliers are profiteering in this country, which is why I'm starting to import alot more of my stuff... even with shipping it works out cheaper from a retailer overseas than the supplier in this country.

well, surely it's up to us to put pressure on them? Riots! Strikes! ANCLY!

You may have been.. but there is no telling with some people how serious they'd take it.

These prices are pretty crazy, but man what a card. I wonder if these prices are going to stick. The only thing that worries me about getting one is the size, checked it out at Rage and the 5870 is massive, dunno if it will fit in my case.

Well, now doesn't that just open up a door for someone to come and open a business with thinner margins.....

ok sorry if this is a little off topic but ive been reading alot of posts about importing etc. now im getting this card at the end of the year(if nvidia doesn bring out anything special) now the options i have are:

phoning matrix or somebody ordering the card from them and taking my pc in for them to fit it.

buying it from kalahari or somewhere and TRYING to put it in myself( dono how difficult it is)

ordering from the u.s. which would avoid the SA supplier markup but i'll get the import costs and shipping.(plus im not exactly sure where to buy from)

or ordering from wantitall or someone who imports from amazon in america(seeing as how amazon dont import here because of the f'd up post offices)

which would be cheaper?

buying it from kalahari or somewhere and TRYING to put it in myself( dono how difficult it is) Cheaper but still expensive

ordering from the u.s. which would avoid the SA supplier markup but i'll get the import costs and shipping.(plus im not exactly sure where to buy from) Cheapr due to exchange rate. Not sure on import costs.

or ordering from wantitall or someone who imports from amazon in america(seeing as how amazon dont import here because of the f'd up post offices) Wantitall are normally quite expensive

which would be cheaper?

That's what I think of it.
