7.2mb Really?

How will I know if my E220 is 7.2mbps capable? I recently updated the software from the Vodacom website and I am still using the 3.6Mbps data bundle. Speedtest reaches max 1.8mbps at the moment.

Download MDMA (sticky in the MTN forum). It will show you your uplink/download profile. Should be 1400/3600. If that is correct, then it's probably lack of backhaul in your area.

Thank you, that is precisely what I needed. My profile is on 3600 but I only get a max of 1800.

Perhaps they shouldn't use terms like 3.6 and 7.2 because it makes people think that those are speeds they are likely to get, whereas they are just service differentiators.

Ok, I am here in Summerstrand, PE for a few days.
There must be a tower close by as the signal is excellent. (does not drop below 5 bars)
Although the latency is poor, the d/l is not too bad for VC. The u/l is poor in comparison to the d/l.

I am on a 3.6 connection and convert my top up to data. In this way my 2gb per month only costs 19c per mb. This allows me to control my volume of data purchased per month. Data is only valid for 60 days max but I can bank my airtime for much longer and only convert to satisfy my needs.
If you are fortunate enough to live close to a Telkom 3G enabled tower, you will be able to experience d/l speeds of close to 5mbs. Best of all they have not as yet advertised the fact that they have the "fastest" bb speeds.
But if you travel, VC still offers the best connectivity experience.

when last did you do a speed test. as far as i can understand 3.6 was a vas untill 01.04-09. up untill then 1.8 was standard. but that said if you used to get 1.8 you should be getting much better speeds now.

vodacom advertises speeds of up to 7.2. this is not a theoretical estimate or anything like that. if you meet the criteria 100% you wil get it. just having a 7.2 capable device, a 7.2 vas and your house next to a tower doesnt mean you will have a 7.2 dl. it means you can expect speeds of up to 7.2.

Well in the middle of a 300mb download the connection was dropped.
I tried to reconnect for a few minutes but was unsucessfull.
Then bang I was back online and decided to do a speedtest to JHB.
Wow, the fastest connection I have ever had from VC.



BTW. I am using a Novatel MC 950D modem on a 3.6 connection.
VC I don't know what you did, but keep it up! Or maybe I had the network to myself.

Actually seems quite good today, normally around 1Mbps dl and ul.

My NeoFlex Data 15GB plan is R899 - device cost included. And it's a lot faster / more reliable than Vodacom HSDPA. Just saying.
( This of course could be deemed a sweeping comment, and should be seen for what it is, my own personal experience. )

The beautiful thing in our current market is that you can choose any of a number of broadband providers for your broadband needs. Unless you move to another provider if you are unhappy with the service or pricing competition won’t help to drive down prices.

Very true, unfortunately I think far too many just accept and cough up for whatever they're dealt.

Nope, it's your personal experience (you said 'my') and thus you're not wrong.

Trust me, we're all scratching our heads on how Neotel can offer 8c/MB.

I think iBurst also offers a similar rate.

Just want to add my 2c ......... My one bar HSDPA is faster and more stable than my Neotel, so while I may not like the high prices, I'd pick it over Neotel anyday.
