70% Digital TV set-top-box subsidization

70% of R700 is R490. Why only R300? Should be R210. Either way wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole.

No doubt , paws are going to be greased somewhere along the line.

I will buy one from another source. I just have a funny feeling about these boxes supplied by the government. Fk'em I don't need their crap :p

I really want to know who is on this deal... R700 per box!!! You can buy one in the UK from any supermarket for ÂŁ20! off the shelf without any Govt Subsidy.

I agree that R700 is pricey but you can't compare our boxes with the freeview boxes in the UK. Ours will be more expensive as they have more features such as mpeg4 support.

And government propaganda control.:erm:

Deputy Minister Dina Pule explained that the STBs for free-to-air services will have standardised operating systems prioritising security features, interoperability, addressability and inter-connectability.

"These features enable the disconnection of stolen boxes and reduce the possibility of an influx of boxes not manufactured or approved in South Africa from flooding the market.

You can't buy it from anywhere else, that's the point. The government isnt subsidizing the poor, they are just decreasing their profit margin when selling to them!

This irritates me. Why on earth would you deliberately want to make your system incompatible with everywhere else?

That means that international digital TV's won't work, PVR's won't work, etc, etc, etc. Which means that if we want such things in SA, they will have to be customised for our market. Which means that the volume discounts won't kick in. Which means that we get to pay through the arse for the toys we want.

All because? Some ANC bigwig decided that kickbacks for their friend was more important than the people that they represent.

Wonderful!

DSTV decoders are R300 .Why R700 .The gov is up to their old tricks again.Wonder who will manufacture them. Why dont they use what is already out there instead of reinventing the wheel. If they use DSTV decoder they have no control and that is the point.

Actually they are closer to R500 these days. Multichoice subsidise their decoders heavily so that it is cheap for customers to sign up. They make their money back later through the subscription. A Multichoice employee has said on the dstv forums that the 1110 decoder actually costs close to R900.

Why does it matter where they're manufactured? Protectionism?

I moved 4 months ago. The new place did not have a DSTV dish or aerial (i had dstv before I moved). I have since not had anything installed. Can't say I miss it. I mostly watch rented movies and series.
