8ta 10gig myth

Good day. I want to test my coverage before signing up for this deal. I have checked on the site for my coverage and it's all pink, but I was fooled by Vodacom before when I was all red on their map so I need to do some trail and error before taking the plunge. Best bet? Starter pack and test?

MTN is the tits in my area so I don't really mind switching over to their network.
 
I'm quite displeased. I've waited more than 48 hours and my sim had still not been activated. I tell them I received my sim Friday and they tell me it takes 48 hours, I then have to explain that Wednesday is more than 48 hours after Friday. Of course I had to call back three times because the operator drops me. I am then told to do a reset of my phone and try again, at which point I explain that that is useless as my phone was off in any case, the response is that the sim needs to be in the phone whilst on for 48 hours??? Of course only after I respond that that is quite nonsensical and as this is a data package shouldn't even need to be in a phone she finally checks and sees that the activation hadn't been done on 8ta's side and that I must wait a little longer! Sorry, that is unacceptable, Cell-C can activate within a few hours (and they did) so why should I wait 48 and then be told to wait more!!!

After complaining I'm told that she'll send an e-mail to follow up on why it hasn't been activated... if my sim is not activated by tomorrow then I'm cancelling and going to Cell-C (already have a 5Gb package with them, so may as well get a second). I better not be charged for days waiting for activation :(
 
Hi there,

im mostly an observer not a poster but had to tell about my experience at Canal Walk today. I came in in the ealry afternoon to apply for their 10 Gig special, handed in all the documentation. 30 mins later I cam back after receiving a phone call, got my modem, paid and left. What a great experience. And all is up and running and the speed is great. :)

They had stock and even checked coverage on their own internal website that is more precise than the coverage map on their public website. I get signal and the only reason I didn't get my SIM today was because I didn't have my latest payslip with me. Going back on Friday, which should prevent any billing errors (e.g. 8ta billing me for June) :wtf:

Im very interested in this offer but unfortunately ive struggled to get more information in regards to the offering from phoning in and or searching on the site...

What i need to know is :
A) do we get a dynamic public ip address assigned each time we connect?
b) are we shaped and how if so
c) most nb , are incomming connections allowed?

I have been burnt by cell-c who keep changing their firewall policies preventing me from using the service as i require..
You see i have the dongle plugged into a home server which i access from work to get files establish vpns' and host my own little site for testing.... Now dsl doesnt screw around with your connection, you get what you pay for , but with many 3G providers they block incomming connections which will be pointless...
If for some reason you do block incomming connections, is there a "Unrestricted" APN we may use to achieve a open service?
 
For that a fixed line would be ideal but unfortunately something like that is close to impossible in this country. We need about another 30 network operators to light some fire under the current providers. I feel sorry for people trying to run a server on a mobile internet connection.

8ta 3G data card in CellC speedstick

Just to add to this Thread (keeping in mind that I haven't read through all the previous posts);
The 8ta 3G data card works 100% in the CELLC speedstick.

I previously subscribed to the CellC promotion ( R299 which includes 5GB monthly for 24 months and a fast USB modem; that can dl up to 21.6 mb/s) before the 8ta promotion was available.
I found that the 5GB's a month were not enough and subscribed to 8ta's 10GB internet promo 5 + the extra 10GB for a total of R300.

I didn't have to change any setting and I could automatically connect with my Cellc Speedstick on the 8ta network, which is great.

Having all my paperwork ready signing up for the service took me 20min's and I was very impressed.
The only downer was that signing up at the end of the month the sales consultant forgot to explain that you get charged on a pro-rata rate, so you only pay about R40 for that month and also only receive about 1.6GB with your full 10 GB only the next month again. (keep this in mind if you're applying for this service)

I've been around from adsl to 3G and find this promotion currently the best value for money - perfect for gaming and series downloads.(as it works great when you game until 12pm and let your downloads automatically start running from 12 - 5)

Also to add to this great service vs others - do not be fooled by MTN's Uncapped 3G promo; Users on this network gets shaped once they've downloaded more then 3GB to a speed of 128kb/s, which will take you back to old dialup speeds almost.

anyone else being billed for itemised billing on their 8ta data contract?
i saw more than expected taken off my bank account and queried it a month ago - turns out that i was being charged for itemised billing - pretty useless for a data only contract. I asked them to stop that "service" and to refund me. they agreed. a month later, and my bank reflects a similar deduction. wonder what's happening there... :-/
