Hi all,

If this is in the wrong section, or is missing some information, sorry :S.

I have a 1mb connection at home through Cybersmart, and have had an issue of the ADSL connection resetting. Originally I thought it was the ISP/modem but having tried a Afrihost trial account, and changing the router, the issue persists. The only reason I'm trying to actively fix this now is my 8ta contract is about to expire.

What logs can I look for/information can I get to help figure out what the problem with the line is? I'm a complete novice when it comes to ADSL.

Thanks!

Look at the SNR / Noise levels on the line. If it's high (like there's no POTS filter on it or you notice static on the line on a voice call) then it's an issue with the actual connection to your exchange and nothing to do with the router or ISP.

I had this before on several occassions. We still have the OLD yellow plugs and my dad's house, so carbon tends to form on the metal points, which then starts causing interference and noise.

@Compton_effect, the is because the distance between you and the exchange was too long for a stable 10mb connection, they usually auto-adjust this to the best possible connection speed for you nowadays (they'll automatically drop until it connects stably)

My SNR is about 15dB, and the attenuation is around 34dB. Funnily enough, there we NO POTS filters on the phone lines (no idea how I missed that), so I've put one on each. it seems better, but still drops. What other info can I find?

Hi There Vintaco,
If you had no POTS filters on and you ansered or made a phone call then it would drop the connection for sure. make sure that if you have a burglar alarm connected to the phone that you put a POTS on that as well.
This link I put on my blog may help you with some of the ADSL.
And this one will point you to a site that based on the info you provide will give an indication of the speed that is possible with the connectivity that you have.

Good Luck

Tim

Hi Tim,

Thanks for the above, I checked the alarm and adjusted the POTS filter for it. I've attached logs from my ISP over the past day. I also checked my SNR and tonight it is below 10 :/.

What should I do?
