Can anyone explain what happens physically when Telkom activates their ADSL service on your line. Are there manual changes at the exchange, do they flip a switch, push a button, what? I assumed its just a digital switch they have to hit.

I am currently in the process of getting ADSL activated on my telkom line. When i say currently it has been 4 weeks now. I have been told many things regarding why it has been so problematic, i'm trying to understand where the complexity comes in.

More info regarding my problem - if you have a week to read see below, or just ignore. I'm just venting.

During the course of my adsl activation attempts a number of problems arose.
  1. The first time they activated the adsl on my line it took a week. I received an sms, and that night discovered my line (voice and all) was dead.
  2. 2 Weeks later and numerous calls during mid-day to find out if i was home (DURING THE WEEK???) i got the voice line fixed - apparently a short circuit.
  3. Had to re-activated dsl on my line, and now i have no ADSL signal on the modem - right now i'm thrilled i have voice. According to the Call Center the line is active but its not syncing with the router and so they have to log a fault which could potentially cost me R500

could be the modem. Ask them to come out and test your line or barow a modem to test it your self before you get them out as they will charge you if the fault is on your side.

They have to "install" a jumper between the MDF and the DSLAM (both at the exchange).

Your issue is more than likely a cable issue between your DP, SDC and the MDF. They must fix this at their own cost.

But, like Uli has recommended, make sure your setup is 100% and that there is no fault from the jack via the modem/router to your PC - before you log the fault!

they might of cocked up and put the dsl on the wrong line...

My mom had the same problem... with 1+2(but two was they disconected the line and added the adsl and line to some other line.
finally they added the adsl to the right line, and then router syncd and visited www.telkomsa.co.za/verifyadsl and all was working...

Thanks. Will first check the modem. Sure they've gone and activated the wrong line.

Thanks moggie. That was what i was looking for.

Update If anyone's still out there, there, there......

So telkom technician got my line to sync. But now i can't get internet access. According to telkom the line is now hundred percent, and according to the ISP (afrihost), its 1 of three problems,
  1. Modem is faulty (checked this)
  2. Router details are incorrect (checked this with telkom guest details)
  3. The line is faulty (not according to telkom)

According to the ISP if 1, and 2 have been checked then its probably the ESR at the exchange. ESR anyone????
