I have been out of the ADSL game for a few years (went mobile). I want to find out what the requirements are for ADSL internet nowadays.

My understanding:
  • Telkom analogue line rental - R 189
  • Telkom ADSL connection (2 Mbps) - R 165
  • External ISP for internet account - R <variable>

A total of R 354 to Telkom before I have internet access. I remember hearing a story of someone that needed to have a Telkom Closer package AS WELL, otherwise he may not have received the serviced. Is it true that you need a voice package as well, or do you just need the line and ADSL rental?

The landscape has changed a bit and you can save a few ronts...

Yes, the Telkom analogue is still a pre-requisite.

However, you can now lease your DSL connection directly from an ISP as a bundled or standalone package and save some money.

Telkom ISP (Telkom Internet) have to lease the DSL connection from Openserve (the old Telkom Wholesale division) just like any other ISP.

for R399 you get the Do basic package from Telkom which incudes:

+10 GB SoftCap data + 10 GB Free Data (Promotional data valid until 31 March 2016)
+Up to 2Mbps ADSL
+1 Email account (with 3 GB of storage and 5 aliases)
+Free Night Surfer data (12am - 7am)
+Line rental included
+Wi-Fi Enabled modem included

AFAIK as of 10 months ago they don't offer this any longer to new customers (OP is welcome to try though). Or if they do, it's now subject to a 24 month contract and the price went up as well.

Nah... This deal is still valid and ongoing. The extra 10GB has fallen away as per the ad at the end of March 2016 but yes it's on a 24 month contract.

Anyway I was going to try this deal but I do not want to be bound to any of these companies so I have opted to have a month to month payment option. Now just to find something that can fit my needs. It sucks having a tight budget but it sucks even worse being bound to a 2/3 year contract after reading all the painful horror stories a lot of the guys here have to go through.

So I'm going to find out today if I have a voice line and ADSL line installed if there will be any charge and what that charge may be.

I always said I'd never have anything to do with Telkom whilst they do not have naked ADSL but I just can't get by with no Internet any longer so I unfortunately have to take the plunge and pay these damn pirates their protection money (read as Voice Line Rental )

I think this is the most compelling at the moment is .. http://www.afrihost.com/site/product/adsl_capped as the network works well at a reasonable cost. Only thing I dislike is that you can't pay them via EFT, unlike Vox.

You can sign-up initially for a free 1GB test a/c, then have free after hours data until the end of June. Read the small print as well, especially taking note of :

** After-Hours Data
- 1GB Package After-Hours Data is available until 30 June 2016.
- FREE and UNLIMITED internet usage After‑Hours, between 23:30 and 07:30 Every Day.
- After Hours Data will only be available to active Capped DSL clients who have a positive data balance. For example, if you have no available data (monthly allocation or top-up data) or your account has been Suspended or Paused, you will NOT receive free After-Hours data.

Thinking of signing up for additional data after July starts, either the 10GB @ R29, or 1GB @ R7 Prepaid, just to keep the after hours free going ! .. though I do already have Vox Bolt-on 6pm - 6am weekdays + full weekends, not linked to Fatpipe (an advantage).

You can look at Vox Fatpipe which will give you the Bolt-on as well, if they've not changed things. Both networks working well, most of the time. Can't 'speak' for the others, except Web Africa which I use only occasionally during peak-hours.
