Since when is 8mbps the maximum for ADSL2+ ?

ADSL2+ has a maximum downspeed of 24Mbps and a "minimum maximum" of 8Mbps.

Actually, according to a Mybroadband article a couple of weeks ago, the broadband speed in the States are 1.x Mbps...

luckily for us our international speeds are crap (at least, the Telkom stuff), so it might last you a whole day of heavy surfing and youtubing.

Nice to hear they've been testing 8Mbps although it seems they must have misplaced the techies who were doing extensive testing in 2001 and 2002 at that very same speed. Back then they boasted of streaming 2 online TV channels and 1 online radio channel and still being able to surf the net with ease. With Telkom's network falling apart all over the place it would be interesting to see how many people even get close to 8Mbps now.

Nonetheless this is progress so there's no reason to complain

They are pushing ADSL to its maximum of 8mbps. They are still starting to roll out ADSL2+ equipment. It was pretty obvious from the article.

If this means Telkom will be bumping 384k people to 512k+, 512k to 4Mb, 4Mb to 8Mb+ and staying at the same price for 2008/09, I'd be happy.

Yep that's the quote. Maybe if you read the article you'd see this: “to determine the impact on the stability of our copper network when pushing the technology to its maximum”

should, but will it? Telkom has such a good track record of looking after its users.

i would vote for more bandwidth over more speed, since getting a 8-24mb line would not improve performance on gaming.
