Hi All

I eventually got Cybersmart to transfer my ADSL line back to my name.

I called up Telkom and asked for the ADSL upgrade from 1mb to 10mb. They went and upgraded it to 4mb instead of 10mb???

Could there be a reason for them not upgrading to a full 10mb ? or were they just not listening. The telkom guy did say that the exchange does support 10mb.

Here are my line details

Downstream Upstream
SNR Margin : 26.0 12.0 db
Line Attenuation : 36.5 19.5 db
Data Rate : 4096 512 kbps
Max Rate : 11008 952 kbps
POWER : 19.5 5.5 dbm
CRC : 6 0

Thanks
Ryan

What is your exchange area?

Else - what is your telephone number prefix? eg. 012-567xxxx (do not give the last 4 digits!).

Congratulations, you are in a broadband enabled area.

The following Telkom service is available in your location:
•ADSL is available in your area
•Your exchange is also enabled for 10Mbps
You are connected to the BARDENE (RBDE02) exchange.

I got the same reply using your prefixed number.

Phone Telkom and ask them why they did not bump you to 10Mbps, as per your order. Could be that you are too far from the exchange...

Data Rate : 4096 512 kbps
sync speeds looks like old dslam , new ones sync at 4095/507, then you can normally be bumped up

His exchange is 10Mbps enabled, so he should have been linked to the new DSLAM. Could also be due to a lack of free ports on the new DSLAM....

Just remember you might not be connected to the exchange directly, if you are in a complex or highly populated area you could be connecting via a mini exchange that connects to the main exchange. Those mini exchanges usually don't support 10Mb yet.

Hi All

Just called Telkom now. They confirmed that the exchange can support 10MB. But when you request an upgrade on your ADSL line they only go up to 4mb. They said a telemarkter will contact me to promote a 10mb line upgrade ????? Any of you heard of that before?

Apologies. This is probably not the correct place for this - off topic - but does anyone know if there is a site to check when your area is due for the Telkom auto-upgrades? I called 10210 and 10215 and they went ....uhmmmm, ja, ok.....and then ................................................................crick crick,....crick, crick.

Thanks in advance and apologies.

There isn't a site telling you about the upgrade plans and only as they become enabled for 10MB. The site is Broadband stats. If your area isn't enabled then just signup to be notified when it does.

The other best bet is to get into contact with a Telkom Technician or area manager that will spill the info to you (its not impossible but also not easy to do this) :).

Sounds like ballz to me (no not the online radio station).

Keep phoning until someone is willing to do it for you.
