Advanced vs Basic Data Bundles ?

I use a pre-paid SIM in my E272 and recently loaded a 2G Basic bundle at R389.

This bundle will run out in the next couple of days, and I'd like to know from you guys if it's worth paying double the price for the Advanced data bundle (HSDPA 7.2)


Also, how many airtime Rands in excess of the price of the data bundle do you need on the SIM - I tried to buy a data bundle that would leave only about R10 airtime but it wouldn't allow that.
 
According to me it depends on what you use your internet connection for. I've found that a normal 3.6 Vodacom internet connection is fine for Skype and YouTube. With the faster internet connection you will use your data cap faster as well.

1st question is what would you be using the service for would you benefit from going to 7.2mbs ?

Its worthwhile if you go out of bundle because of the OOBR rate

As for the amount left over when purchasing a bundle, in your case R10 this should not be a problem when purchasing a bundle.

I just use it for web surfing and SkypeOut and it's doing just fine, so I'll stick with the Basic Bundle.


Edit: BTW, when I was in the UK at the beginning of this month I found "3" had upgraded to 7.2 without changing their pricing - 3GB for R200 - wonder why it couldn't be done here.

Shouldn't need any at all - I've often loaded airtime of exactly the bundle cost then bought the bundle, leaving R0.00.
 
Yea i wouldn't go after the speeds, it's not like you even get 3.6Mbits to begin with , is anyone actually getting between 3.6 and 7.2 Mbits ???? [and consistently too]

The only reason the advanced bundles is worth looking at is if you tend to go out of bundle , and do not want to buy an additional bundle for the little bit you go over. So it gives a little more flexibility, but you need to do some careful calculations as to when is it actually worth it...sometimes it's simply better to buy 2GB, use it up and buy 500MB vs. the advanced offerings.

i personally have not seen a difference between advanced and standard data bundles.my modem is 7.2 enabled and to be honest,i got faster speeds the time i payed R49 for 3.6 (4.4mbps dl nd 1.2mbps ul) than when i loaded an advanced bundle (3.6mbps MAx and still 1.2mbps ul). Maybe we should do speed test and post them on the site coz the only benefit i noticed was the carry over and same ibr and oobr.:confused:

The advanced bundles vs basic is almost like giving you the option between two cars.

a] One with max speed of 160 km/h
b] One with max speed of 240 km/h

However they don't tell you, that 99% of the time, you will be driving 60 km/h due to traffic and 1% you -might- go near the max speed, but you will never actually get it anyway...

So all that remains is the OOB rates, and since Vodacom allows you to buy a new bundle the moment your current bundle is used up, it's basically kinda pointless. One day we're going to look back and wonder why did we need to do this bundle buying in the first place...it's stupid micro management ..imagine you had to manage your voice contract like this ["wait i need to load another talk bundle my 10 minute pack just ran out, i'll call you right back"] ....
 
Advanced is the better of the two however you need oodles of cash to make it work but you have to strategise. Buy an advanced bundle at the start of a month, make it s t r e t c h till into the next month (carry over kicks in) and then continue OOB at the same rate till the end of the next month with whatever money you keep on loading onto the sim, R1 R2 R5 R5000, you dont need to buy another bundle. The secret is wait for CARRY OVER to kick in before your bundle is used up. :rolleyes: ;)

We can only dream about prices like this.....

Companies never add value for customers in South Africa, the customer must pay for everything. Full stop.

I've been saying this for a long time.

there shouldn't BE OOB - there shouldn't even be bundles! It should work like pay-per-second calling.

17c per Meg - that's IT. No OOB, no Bundles, No Advanced/Basic Choices - nada! would make it MUCH easier to not make it so difficult & scary for a lot of n00bs - in effect welcoming more customers as it's not so bladdy complicated.

On the BB-S option i get around 4.8Mbps... consistently.

If i had the money for BB-A, i would most definitely go for it. Because i know i would get 7.2Mbps.

Mine flatlines at 3.6MBps, definitely an indication that the tower has more bandwidth.

You should load a R149 BB-A bundle on a pre-paid SIM and do some tests.

I tried. I was hoping to see 7.2, but the Vodacom speed test only went up to 5.8Mbps and only getting 4.0 on speedtest.net.

On occasion my modem flatlined on 5.2Mbps on BB-S. Lucky for me i'm sitting right across the tower :D

I'm curious to see how much i would get out of BB-A.

It's not in the Cellphone companies' best interest to add value for south african customers because we don't really have much of a choice but to pay and they KNOW this!!

So you b1tch and go to MTN and they have their own issues, you go to CellC and have other issues and soo on and so forth. We live in a country run by monopolies who have boards of directors that don't particularly care about the people they service but simply about what they can get out of them.

Sad but that's South Africa. International companies have their own issues but at least you can connect to the internet while you ache and not have to spend your life savings on the connection!!
