A capped account (assuming this is the test account) should perform exactly like a Business account on a line matched to account speed.

Did the experiencing change immediately after switching back?

We had the exact same discussion the last time I complained about it - I am aware of this, thus I asked for help because it wasn't something I could solve, and there was no obvious reason for it either.

AfriGenie did reset my account - whatever that entails - and it was fine for the rest of the weekend.

It was interesting to note that his test account authenticated immediately, so there goes your theory that the 35-45 second delay on my business account's authentication has anything to do with the "enormous" distance from here to Joburg, or wherever it authenticates. I noted that the biggest difference between the 2 authentications, was that my business account looks like it's authenticates, with all the flickering etc., and then it's like it starts all over again once it seems that it's nearing completion. AfriGenie's account didn't do that.

We have a number of radius servers spread across South Africa, so there should definitely not be any reason for authentications taking that long.

I have a feeling what may have happened is that the IP address that your account was receiving was somehow still linked to a different region, and when I reset your account, that IP changed or updated to the correct region.

I'm keeping an eye on your account as well, so if you notice any strange occurrences please let me know!

So here is my feedback on this account (10 Mbps).
Downloads (HTTP & HTTPS) run perfectly all times of the day.

Twitch streaming is fine from around midnight to 6/7pm in the evening. But during the 7pm to midnight period when everyone is home - which is arguably when most of the streams are on - the account just utterly fails and cant stream a stream at all, even trying to go through the Livestreamer program which uses 10 threads.

Have you been able to test any other streaming services during that same period?

I am busy with some testing on my side, which Twitch.tv streams do you usually watch?

Well in terms of streaming live i only use twitch. Youtube has always been fine.

There is no defined twitch stream that does it, really you can pick any stream as they are all capped at 3500kbps - 60fps thus all using the same bandwidth. If you're referring to region, anything coming from America.

But I watch nightly "Itmejp" which runs from 8pm till 1am, but tonight it's from 10pm till 1am.

It does look like a few Exchanges went down because of load-shedding and aren't coming back up. Could you perhaps send me a PM with your Line number so that I can check up on this.

Thanks AfriGenie, sent as requested.

Yup, it does look like the entire Exchange is down at the moment, I'm not even able to get any line readings at the moment.

It does look like Telkom is working on restoring the Exchange and getting it up and running again, no ETR yet though.

:wtf: That was definitely not the conclusion that was made when I and Afriman spoke a while back. it's in this thread, quite a few pages back. The conclusion was that the distance from here to Joburg is causing my extra long authentication. This was obviously disproved by your account authenticating within 15 seconds from my router.

I have a feeling what may have happened is that the IP address that your account was receiving was somehow still linked to a different region, and when I reset your account, that IP changed or updated to the correct region.

But the authentication is still long on my account? Only streaming was improved...

Thanks for keeping an eye anyway. ;)

Up and running, thanks for the feedback again!

I'm not sure if my router is fizzling out or my exchange is borked.

What the hell does a trace route like this mean?

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.3.9600]

C:\WINDOWS\System32>tracert www.google.com

Tracing route to www.google.com [66.8.14.57]

Trace complete.

C:\WINDOWS\System32>

I've had a lot of dropped connections in the last two days. The internet is usually working okay, but sometimes when it's down the router reports 'disconnected' in the connection status - something it never normally does. I've only ever seen 'connecting' and 'connected' until now.

Telkom has stopped their exchanges from responding to ICMP, UDP and TCP requests for "security reasons". I guess they thought they were being DDoSed, so they need to mask the IP address. It's really annoying, because it makes finding out if your exchange is congested (or if there is a problem with your line, not the exchange) near impossible from the customer's end (hop 2 might be the problem with latency, and you'd never know).

giggity is correct, I'm not sure why Telkom felt this was necessary, but it is going to make diagnosing line and Exchange issues very tough in the future.

Should it affect the quality of DSL connections? My step-bro lives up the road from me, on the same exchange but different ISP, and says that his connection has been terrible for the last two days as well.

It definitely should not be affecting the connection itself. Do you know if he has been seeing reduced speeds or increases in latency? The actual latency should still reflect on the speedtest itself, you just won't be able to see it on the second hop.

I'll ask him to run some tests and I'll get back to you.
