I'd be able to watch one stream on 480p without any buffering, then on a different stream I'd barely be able to watch on 240p because of buffering, on a 4Mbps line.

I'm wondering if certain streams aren't coming from different servers, hopefully I'll be able to get this figured out and get every stream running smoothly.

I often find that on this account it will sometimes buffer a stream that it plays perfectly one day, but then this morning it struggles. After a few page refreshes it seems to eventually get a good connection.

But on a 4Mbps line you will be able to watch up to "high" setting. At least that's what i used to be able to do.

I am looking for advice from anyone who can provide it it. For the last 3 weeks I have been battling with my internet speeds that would just drop for no reason - everything would be slow. However, during these times, I would test a download using a YouTube downloader and my line runs at 3,4mbps while everything else only runs at about 1mbps. I have been told it is a fault at my exchange and that as result there is congestion. Now I am a bit confused as to how the youtube downloader can always run at a decent speed where everything else is slow as s***. Thanks in advance. On a 4 mbps line.

The international speed varies between 20% and 50% of speed. The local speed is okay. Pings are okay, but the throughput is definitely slowed on Afrihost.

I have compared with a telkom account. See below.
Seems a lot like previous "optimization" during the bandwidth shortage.

That's a pretty strange one. It could be related to a DNS issue, depending on how you have configured your DNS. We'd need to look at the stats you're reporting and how you are drawing that data. Generally speaking it's not normal for everything except a certain downloader to run at different speeds. But I have seen issues where torrents and skype run where other services are dead - usually due to DNS.

Are you connected using anything like passthrough or any unusual router configurations?

Seems like your second hop latency is much higher on our account that on Telkom's but we've seen that Telkom do (in some areas) route their own traffic differently, which is why during loadshedding in certain areas only Telkom accounts work while all other ISPs don't.

Without seeing the DSLAM/BRAS hop on the trace we can't see whether the latency is introduced before our network, but I can confirm that we haven't seen high latency on our side (from our monitoring) but we'll need to test further to confirm what could be happening.

Definitely not a bandwidth shortage that I know of. I was running some downloads over the weekend. Not quite line speed, but I was getting solid international speeds. That was in the North though, I'll ask our guys in CT to test in the South as well.

That sucks. I've seen a few cases where lines seem unstable following loadshedding, I dunno if that was the case here.
