ADSL Network Performance [Medium Impact] 15:10, 19 Jun 2015

Our network team and management are aware that some of our clients have been experiencing poor internet performance over our ADSL services. Due to high demand for bandwidth on our network, affected clients may be experiencing slow speeds and high latency, particularly during periods when demand is very high. We sincerely apologise for the poor experience, and we’d like to assure our clients that their feedback and concerns are very important to us, and every possible resource at our disposal is being employed to improve overall network performance.

We are currently in the process of designing and deploying comprehensive network upgrades nationally.
Unfortunately we’re unable give a timeframe for these upgrades to be completed, but we commit to providing our clients with as much information as possible as it becomes available.
Once again we would like to sincerely apologise to affected clients for the poor experience they have had, and assure them that we will continue to dedicate ourselves to providing the best possible internet experience.

Have any of you guys been experiencing disconnection issues? My line seems to be disconnecting every now and then. Even though I'm on the Business Uncapped, I still schedule my downloads in the night, but in the recent nights my downloads were failing because of the disconnections.

Pathetic, but at least I have my speed back.

Ping to 8.8.8.8 increased from about 20ms at 6:30am to 808ms at 7:36am. Same pattern every weekday.

I'm thiiiis close to switching to a 2mb Business account due to my current ISP woes... I'm beginning to wonder if I should after reading some of these posts...

Remember that if you happen to test right at the time that pretty much the entire business world logs on, there will be induced latency on your local exchange, our network and pretty much the world. 7:30 to 8am would usually not be great times to test your internet. Whenever that spike occurs, it can take our system 10 to 15 minutes to compensate and put things onto a balance where latency is preserved.

Can't skype, can't game. International ping is !@#$. Anybody else having the same problems?

Pretty weird, international was good for me this weekend in the North. I think local latency might affect overall experience, but international links themselves are good. If I test directly from the data centre, we should be seeing pretty normal international :(

Yep. Internet is crap today.

Can't stream 720p on Youtube.

Definitely not looking great there. I'm guessing latency is the issue, you should usually be able to stream 720p with 4Mbps throughput :(

Thanks for reply. My router is set to receive DNS settings automatically from the ISP. Should I change this?

I would usually say no, because if we ever have problems with DNS we can push alternative settings to your router. However, as a test, you can always switch over to Google DNS 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 and see if that affects your experience in anyway.

Afrihost claims Business Uncapped has no prioritisation.

Please explain?!

Definitely there is no shaping on Business. But just remember that any network, local, office or broadband must have some priority to ensure that there is basic operation. So I think this is a reference to basic network QoS that would give gaming highest priority on all services.

Looking at your latency, I would say that you're testing when demand is high and throughput and latency are probably not great :(

http://www.speedtest.net/result/4447446801.png 3.51Mbps 0.42Mbps 1ms ping

See, speedtest is fine, but when I try and Skype or game, it doesn't work. International ping is terrible. I can ping afrihost.com and get a constant 12-13 ms ping, but yet I keep on getting lag spikes in game.

Something is weird here, I don't think I have ever seen a 1ms ping over a speedtest. Not even sure how that would be possible in any scenario. You are pinging a server in a data centre, via DSLAM, BRAS, IPC and peering link as fast as most people ping their router. Something is reporting weird there :(

I can definitely imagine that gaming while latency is high due to demand is terrible. That is definitely our highest priority as gamers seem to suffer the most when demand increases :(
