I know that performance has been less than what we've come to expect in the last few weeks and we fully acknowledge that we've struggled to meet with current demand with our available resources on the network.

Our Technical Director has been focussed solely on improving our clients experience today while he negotiated additional capacity with MTN and Telkom, which he has confirmed has now been approved. I don't have any confirmed or rough dates for the upgrade, but I have been told that we're pushing for a fast resolution. As soon as I have a confirmed date.

We couldn't confirm capacity upgrades prior to this as this was still under negotiation, but now that the process is underway, we can confirm that the network will be upgraded.

I'm glad to see this, finally some progress. I'll rethink my ISP in a few months when things have quieted down and your network's sped up.

So when managers, supervisors, and support staff said it was ordered a week ago...

You say they were wrong, now you say it was under negotiation.

i.e. we cannot believe any communication channel except you?

As we said at the time, nothing was confirmed at that time, and we only received confirmation this morning. Other departments also received the same update this morning, and we were given permission to confirm the upgrades.

Your customers would have a lot more trust and faith in you as a company if you just state the truth eg We have a capacity issue, to alleviate the line congestion we will be shaping p2p between these hours... and new capacity will arrive at such and such a date.

They clearly can't do that because they have dug themselves a hole with their "guaranteed unshaped" and "money back" marketing BS.

You are trying to twist my words.

They confirmed capacity had been ordered. You denied it.

There was no WE

Thank You :o.... that's a start.
Now will AH be able to tell us when and for how long we will be "optimized" on a daily basis or will it just be when congestion reaches a certain level ?

We are very aware of those guarantees and we've never ever defaulted on our money back guarantee (which is completely within the client's discretion to claim unless they default due to non-payment or AUP abuse, etc).

Afriman, after speaking to critical care this morning, they have said that upgrades to the network will be done but are unable to confirm a date...I know i am not priority on your guys list because I cancelled but critical care was very casual about my issue with online gaming, no real attempt to troubleshoot further and sense of urgency was shown by your support staff, not complaining just making you aware that your support staff handles clients that have cancelled with no importance....

That being said, I really hope that you made sure this time to order at least double the capacity that you "think" you need.
In other words, don't forget to include extra on top of what your network techs have worked out... this capacity has to include extra for the time you will no doubt have to wait for implementation. Otherwise, you will end up with the same issue in 2 months, or the same fiasco as when Home Uncapped waited for IPC upgrades. We waited for 3 months for the upgrades, only to be shaped for 20 hours every day AFTER the new capacity finally arrived.

To be honest, I foresee the same BS cycle as last year. New capacity will only arrive next year March/April, and clients will be given every excuse under the sun, and asked to "be patient". There will be no end to this circus, as AH will no doubt still run specials and over-sell the network (CONTENTION... used in the correct context) while "waiting for Telkom to provide".

If this is the case, fine... but then SAY SO.... and give a gesture of reduced pricing till new capacity arrives. Think of this as the penalty (applies to every contract in business) for NOT holding up your end of the bargain. This will go a long way to restore the faith, time and money you have cost ALL your clients THIS YEAR.

....just saying (no need to respond - observation + criticism) :p

If a business offers you 10% of the service you pay for, and asks you to be patient, shouldn't that business also accept 10% payment and a request to be patient from a client? Do Afrihost offer leniency to clients who part pay, or simply cut off their connection if payment isn't received in full? Just curious.

We do believe while you are still a client, you should get our undivided attention. However, with the volume of queries we are receiving that are mostly due to the capacity upgrades we're waiting for, it's possible that it may seem that they're not getting to your query fast enough. I'm pretty sure we'll continue to investigate and improve where we can until the new capacity is lit up and we'll see many of the symptoms reported go away.

But you have defaulted on the basis for the contract/agreement reached in order for AH to receive payments.
ie. AH has broken the agreement of not delivering what the client has paid for. THIS is the most important aspect of doing business, and not the fact that "if you don't like it, you are more than welcome to get the refund and go elsewhere..." - that is just bad business, and tries to cover up the fact that AH is committing a form of FRAUD.

I think that your timeframe is correct this is part of Afrihost business strategy . How to make as much money as possible without supplying the goods . After all you have to pay for the extra capacity only when you got it . The question is how many suckers will stay ?.

Surely MTN has some spare capacity, can't you get some of that? Or is it not that simple?

Capacity on their network isn't the issue - MTN has lots.
The issue is the link between clients, exchanges, breakout points (Telkom IPC). This has been an ongoing issue for a long, long time... in short, it is very poor network management. The moment a problem was identified (contention = over-selling), the correct way was to immediately discuss and negotiate more IPC capacity. Instead, over a month has gone by, and only now was it decided to order more.

I have said it before in this thread.... If you are using the word "contention" as the reason for all the issues on the network, then you are admitting that you do not have enough IPC capacity. Instead of optimising, the way to fix it, is to increase capacity to keep up with the increase in demand - stop selling more/giving away more than you have - it's that simple, no matter what SPIN you put on it ;)

I don't think there is really anything like that, because ultimately we still have to break out of Telkom's network. If we, for interests sake, were ever able to break out directly from an exchange or have your DSL line linking directly to MTN's network, we would never have capacity issues on their national fibre network. The restriction is always on IPC to break out of Telkom onto their network. If MTN could provide IPC directly, it would provisioned within days, however IPC actually belongs to Telkom, so only their technicians are allowed to work with it, even though it is housed in MTN's facility.

What I don't get is, since they know that IPC takes a while to get implemented, why not have a policy where the orders get placed whenever IPC capacity gets to 80% instead of waiting for 100% before the order gets placed.

They really haven't learned anything from the last time.

*sucker over here*
Trying to keep my head, and wait a bit... when the line works, it is by far the best account I have used in 8 years. I would just like some stability, and would appreciate NOT being treated like a 2 year old - I am 40, with 15 years in IT/Network Admin/etc. I don't talk down to my clients, or suppliers, and in return, I would appreciate the same courtesy - be a professional, dammit!!!! :p

There is a possibility that Telkom may roll out fibre in my area in the near future... maybe I need to make more money, open an office in a fibre area, and then not worry about these issues again ;)

You read my mind ;)
If we can see this, then how in the hell do "so-called" experts at AH not see it? Is it not their job? Is that not what they get paid for?

.... sorry, I forgot... we pay them :p

So same **** as the last time. Wait untill it's WAAAY to late, NOW you go and order capacity, and what? We're going to end up waiting MONTHS for the upgrade to come through, and now you're going to start blaming Telkom for not delivering?

You've learned ABSOLUTELY NOTHING from the last time you've had issues. You've learned ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about capacity planning, and you've learned ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about managing customers and customer expections.

You AfriHost, are a bloody JOKE for a ISP.

So long story short, it took the experts at AH about a month to determine that IPC was the issue and that no amount of tweaking or optimising was going to sort it out, yet it took some of the guys here less than 2 weeks to say that....just my observation....
