Afrihost Business Uncapped Feedback - 2

International seems to be a big problem at the moment.

It's hard to say when the network is not performing as well as it could. It could just be local issues being exaggerated. If local was perfect, then we would be able to give a better assessment.

Are there any results that I can look at?

Trace routes and speedtests sent. The trace route indicate major issues on the Business account as far as I can intepret. Please can we sort this. How do escalate this to "critical care"? The free 1GB is performing as it should.

Afriman - I've sent the results to you too. Please have a look.

Will do :(

Haven't gotten anything so far but will keep checking.

That's no good :(

Drop me a PM please. Let me check if there is a Telkom outage in your area :(

It started to work 2 hours later, so I guess no problem, what was strange is that i used the telkom guest account and Saix.net loaded instantly.

From what I've seen recently, I've started to suspect that the guest account does not work like regular accounts. My suspicion, more specifically, is that they don't go via IPC but break straight out onto the internet via Telkom's infrastructure.

Remember that Telkom's ISP services are still using IPC (or at least they are now) so I think the guest account can be misleading.

I'm not sure at which stage they break out, but it seems like in a few recent outages guest accounts have worked when others (ven Telkom ISP accounts) do not. I know that Telkom are currently upgrade BRAS installations to Broadband Network Gateways (BNG's) and if my suspicion is correct this could explain why this happens.

There is nothing to fix probably. Its definitely NOT congestion because then the congestion would be seen on (Plugg, WA, etc accounts), since congestion is irrelevant to the ISP and is to do with the exchange ONLY. cortexenslaver's post clearly shows this.

Its quite obvious Afrihost has reached their capacity and are shaping Business accounts. Its nothing that the Critical Care team can fix anyway, its a simple statement telling your clients that "Business accounts are shaped". Its clearly evident, and transparency is all we want, so that we can make alternative options since this does actually affect our jobs (those that run small businesses and work from home).

Can't wait till I leave at the end of this month, and the moment when I can finally have a decent conference call where I don't have to ask the participants on the other side to keep repeating them selves due to a laggy stream.

This is completely untrue. To shape Business accounts would be against the specifications of the product, it would take days or weeks or programming to effect a change like this, effectively it would require creating an entirely new product. With everything going on, we simply don't have the time or resources to do something like that on the sly, aside from the fact that it's not how we do Business.

Afriguy, I've sent you some speedtests, traceroutes and ping tests etc. as requested. Phone line was out for a while but back on now. Problems persisting. Sent 3 messages due to char limit.

What would explain why AfriGenie's AH test account works fine for me all the time, while my Business Uncapped account does not?

Thanks, I've seen a few from you :) Will take a look at them in a bit.

I'm really not sure, I think I'll need to look at the comparison results for a direct comparison. Although I believe AfriGenie is still awaiting some feedback on a previous query for you.

You mean from the 31st of October, when I sent the second of 2 feedback mails?

Any idea when someone from Afrihost will contact me about the tests I submitted? The lack of communication from Afrihost is amazing. Not a word about if its being looked at, if there is anything being done, nothing.

I believe you'll have some feedback around this soon, our team are making changes where they can and there has already been some improvement. I think we can expect more improvement as they continue to work on this.

Just to show what I'm talking about in PM regarding the unstable speeds and spikes etc., here are two screencaps using afrihost 4mb business uncapped and an IS based capped product from another ISP. Please note, the second account is a faster account, so the speed would obviously be more than 4 meg, but this just illustrates the issue.

Speed curve is up and down the whole time. My pings look similar and are constantly spiking.

Internet Solutions ISP capped account:

Constant, stable speed on this test. Line is obviously capable of supporting this kind of throughput.

Thanks, I believe I've already replied to your PM :)
Lets keep the results there, it'll make it easier to track and escalate off in one batch of results.

Alright. I've sent you a new PM with test results from another ISP as per your request in latest message as well.

It's hard to say. Remember that every area will have multiple exchanges, and it's possible that one can be congested while another close by is not. It depends on how many users there are, what speeds they've signed up for, their usage as well as the capacity of each DSLAM or MSAN.

If you can post some tests, like traceroutes, we can have a good indication of whether it's congestion or not.

The latency looks OK here, your throughput for the line speed definitely leaves more to be desired though :(
Which area are you in?
