Afrihost Business Uncapped Feedback - 2

Time hits 23:00 at night, and all of a sudden, speeds jump from 180KB/s to 750KB/s.... then down to 250KB/s and up to 400KB/s.

Whoever is managing/configuring AH's network software has NOT got a clue!

Segg, I will be visiting the Afrihost offices in Rivonia tomorrow; sounds like you are of the same opinion as the only way to get our accounts working - see my post #3352 above. Any similar support from others whose accounts have not been working as they should be would be of great benefit in sending Afrihost the message that we are the customers, we pay their salaries, we pay for a service that we have not been getting for about 3 months now, and that enough is enough. So, any takers?

Wow, you've been hit badly with this problem! Well if I do rock up at Afrihost HQ I'll be making damn sure I meet whoever is in charge with sorting this thing out, and I'll want to see them actually doing the troubleshooting.

I'm more of a mellow person, I don't believe shouting and screaming solves anything, so if they behave and make some headway I'll let them go home :p

Its a good thing I'm AFK lately, because this problem is approaching a bit more than a month now, if I'm not mistaken., Come December. Latest. It better be working or I'm moving 6 business accounts and lines over to Webafrica or Plugg

Lol. Stop posting and just move to another ISP.

There is no need to be a drama llama about it, if they sort the issues out, move back if the one day aren't happy with the other ISP.

It's unnecessary effort to switch :p

Me, I am an extremist by nature, a real pussycat to a point. I put up with a lot of bull but when I reach a certain point then I just dig my heels in and go for it. My problems with inconsistent speed and a bad performing account have been going on for about 3 months. I have been patient and understanding for some time now, but have finally reached the end of my patience with all the nonsense and lack of time period to resolution that we have been given. – first it was the fault of OS8, then it was the fault of Telkom, then we were assured that it was definitely not because of a lack of capacity, then we are told that bus accounts are not shaped/throttled/ prioritised/whatever term you care to throw at it, then Afrihost admits that they have asked for more capacity, then we are told that more capacity has arrived and the problems are resolved, then its not a capacity issue anymore but a maximising of the backbone which they are working on – notice that nowhere in this whole 3 month fiasco is there ANY form of time to resolution mentioned. During this whole period I am constantly being asked to do tracert on various accounts when Afrihost are fully aware of where the problem lies.
Right now, if Afrihost told me it was nightime at 23h00 hours I would go out and check for myself that this is so.
Long story short, I have had enough and am not going to be in a reasonable frame of mind when I meet with them.

What the hell!

That’s the problem with most South African customers - if they don’t get the service they have been paying for then just shrug your shoulders and move on. With that type of attitude no wonder nothing ever gets resolved.
All this does is breed a culture of non-accountability.
Ever thought that maybe if customers that were not satisfied with a supplier confronted that supplier and created such negative publicity that the supplier would think twice about reneging on their offerings?
I find the apathy of the average South African consumer disturbing. No wonder local service levels, generally, are so pathetic.
So, bud, you cancel and move to the next supplier, who will also treat you with disdain and you will then move to the next supplier, and so on.

1:15am Speed test back to normal, downloads good, streaming good.

Let's see how it is during the day.

Are you for real? You have a problem with moving somewhere else if you don't get what you pay for even though people here have posted their complaints and nothing has been done?

Lol.

Same crap speed this morning again, so what did these so called experts do last night? Absolutly amazing how Afrihost is the best ISP again for 2014, leaves very little hope for clients if this is the best.

Yeah, mine is in the toilet again, too. Had a brief burst from 00:00 till 04:00, then at exactly 04:00 my speed halved, and it's been downhill ever since. Currently sitting on 25% of line speed on ALL protocols.

Again, I have to mention this: How the hell can you tell me it's congestion/contention/not on your side AH????
It is impossible for these drops to happen at a specific time EVERY day, without Afrhost artificially enforcing a certain rule set/policy! Once again, these accounts should NEVER be managed, and it's time for Afrihost to flip a switch and open the flood-gates... if the network dies from being over-contended, then you deal with that as a NEW problem and buy more capacity till the problem goes away. This is the only way forward, as EVERYTHING Afrihost has done till now IS NOT WORKING - TIME FOR A DIFFERENT APPROACH (and NO SPIN on what I've written - WE HAVE HEARD IT ALL AND HEARD ENOUGH).

TIME FOR ACTION... We don't want to hear about your problems AH, nor do we want to hear about "what you are busy with"... WE WANT RESULTS!

Are any other ISPs being affected by these terrible network speeds?

This is definitely an issue specific to our network. The updates we ran on the network over the weekend seem to have made changes to our Uncapped shaping (we only shape Uncapped accounts, not Business or Capped) which was already tightened up and now we believe that traffic that should be shaped is slipping through and consuming more bandwidth than it should, especially P2P.

Sadly not much better this morning, you know your connection is slow when you see the alt text for the Gmail stars.

Yeah looking amazing....

Last Result:
Download Speed: 814 kbps (101.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 366 kbps (45.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 212 ms

We did see some improvement on an overall network level, but it's hard to say how that would translate from an overall network perspective. Clearly some users here did not experience significant improvement, while some other clients did.

The work that needs to be done is by no means complete, and our team are going to continue to work on this, and fly in more expertise if required. At the moment though, we working directly with the hardware & software vendors to find the quickest solution as well as a suitable long term one.

F*** this slow ****. I am canceling end of this month!

I'm sorry about the horrible speeds. I promise you everything that can be done is being done and our technical have been given carte blanche to bring in any resources they need to get this resolved. I'm confident we'll see more improvement until we get this working as it should.

Morning Guys

I see a few theories about peering or trying to get rid of clients being thrown around, and I just want to clear the air here. This is completely untrue.

Over the weekend, ourselves and our upstream vendors ran updates on the firmware that controls our shaping and traffic management systems. This is basically the software that controls how we classify traffic and then determine what must be shaped or not shaped (on Uncapped accounts, we don't shape Business or Capped). After the rollout, we saw reports of poor throughput and this is basically because of contention on the network as a result of shaping not being as effective as it should be.

Our technical team, along with our vendors, are now working to try to find what gaps have opened up that are allowing traffic through that should be shaped, and once they have been able to identify and classify the traffic correctly, we should see contention where it should be, and performance within the range that we expect.

I hope this explains what's happening, we want to be as open as possible so that you guys understand what is happening. If you hav questions, please PM me, I'm happy to explain as much as I can.
