Hi Afriguy

3 days ago i started getting huge speed problems. First off i've tried a telkom account aswell and the same story - So the reason for me contacting you is a last resort. Telkom sent a techie switched ports everything he says he cant see that there is a problem on the line.

The strange thing is this only happens during the day - I asked if the exchange might be congested and he said there is no way since it is a fairly new exchange and is very low populated.

Ok here are the details - I have a 10mb dsl line and I use a afrihost 10mb business uncapped account.

First ping test www.pingtest.net:

2nd test:

as you can see the jitter and packetloss jumps around.

1st speed test:

2nd:

These test show good results but 10 min prior of typing this I did not even receive 1 mb down. So its very jumpy.

My line stats:
Downstream Upstream
Line Coding(Trellis): On On
SNR Margin (dB): 205 109
Attenuation (dB): 90 54
Output Power (dBm): 0 101
Attainable Rate (Kbps): 27192 1164
Rate (Kbps): 10015 1019
D (interleaver depth): 1 1
Delay (msec): 0.19 0.24

HEC Errors: 0 0
OCD Errors: 0 0
LCD Errors: 0 0

Total ES: 0 0

Please let me know if you can see a problem on your side .. or if you are aware of national infrastructure that might be causing this. And no im not in CPT.

Thanks

Sorry to hear that you're experience isn't the best :( There shouldn't be a reason from our end as to why the results are poor, have you chatted to our Support team about this yet?

Let's wait for this outage to be resolved and we can run some thorough tests on the account and line.

Nice to know it isn't just me having issues on the business account :/

What I've noticed over the last 2 days is the speeds are starting to crawl during the day but they are back to fine in the evenings. I had a NNTP download going earlier and it was getting 400KB/s, then it turned 8 and now my line is dying.

Am on a 4meg uncapped unshaped and this is what I'm currently getting:

http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3160131164
http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3160145894

@AfriMan - Can you please assist with this as my internet is slowly becoming unusable during the day :/

EDIT:

Exactly this! >.<

Sorry about this :( We saw an outage in Cape Town earlier today which caused a few issues.
Should all be sorted out now though, shout if you're still noticing slow speeds :)

We'll if i pay almost a grand for internet, I expect it to work.

Absolutely agree with you, we push really hard to see the highest possible uptime figure - but sometimes outages do happen :(
This should be sorted out now, please let me know if you spot any further issues.

I have the same problem - crawling dring the day (less than 1Meg speed) on a 10Meg business account:mad:
From late afternoon onwards I get my full 10M.
I have rebooted my modem, have had the port reconstructed by Telkom, and no, Afrihost, its not my line or my exchange, I have tried with various guest accounts from various providers and they all give me full speed during the day.

My speed this morning (and has been so for the last 2 weeks) is sitting on 40k!!!!!!
Browsing seems to be reasonably fast, but forget about downloading anything - its like I'm being throttled on this business account.

I have checked that my Protocol Prioritisation is off.

I am in the Bordeaux Randburg area.

Come on, Afrihost, please sort this out.
Afriman, please help with this.

Not great seeing this, do you notice this frequently or was it only today/ this morning?

Yup. The irony of shaping a business account only during business hours >.<

We definitely aren't shaping our Business accounts. New sign ups see protocol prioritisation being enabled, however existing clients have it disabled. If you notice your P2P downloads are slow please check the ClientZone, it can be easily disabled :)

I think the Cape Town MTN IPC went down. I noticed the routing changed this morning:

Original:
local -> 105-236-5-193-esr-lo.mtnbusiness.co.za -> ipc-recieve-tb-2a.mtnbusiness.net (41.181.54.86)

Now
local -> 105-236-5-193-esr-lo.mtnbusiness.co.za -> ipc-recieve-jh-4a.za.mtnbusiness.net (41.181.178.5)

I might be wrong.

You're correct :( This should be resolved now, could you test again please?

Thanks AfriGuy. Do you know if the outage was only for today or if there were any other issues during the week as well?

TBut I'm still concerned as why does the issue only happen during Business hours? And was it the same issue yesterday then?

It's hard to judge when outages or issues are going to creep in, we do our best to run a really stable network but issues do happen from time to time :(
We didn't see any issues on our network yesterday, drop me a PM with a bit more info on the experiences yesterday and I'll check this out for you.

Just checked NNTP on my side as well. Down to 40/50kbps on my 4mb line

Wow so they just decide to shape business accounts even though they kept telling us they will never do it.

Afriman, Whats up?

We definitely aren't shaping, the poor throughput was related to an outage we saw earlier this morning.
Should be all sorted now :)

Going like a bullet again.

Download Speed: 1947 kbps (243.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 396 kbps (49.5 KB/sec transfer rate) :)

Awesome to hear it :D
Sorry about the issues this morning, glad it's up and running again to normal speeds!

Afriguy please explain to me: Why is it faster getting my episode via torrent than NNTP. I tried two clients and still my speed for torrents are better than my NNTP speeds

There could be a few reasons for this, the number of connections, news server selection, whether or not the content is still there. A couple things to look at :)

What's your current NNTP setup looking like at the moment?
