Can you say what you believe caused it? If no, then I don't know what to do on this side to ensure I don't add to the larger problem.

I'm so confused at the moment, I don't know why certain things are being stated, asked of customers, and then said it doesn't influence it as previously implied. The only thing I can conclude, is that you guys are confused as well, right?

I think we're all saying the same thing in different ways :)

Demand is the issue, torrents are definitely a big part of the demand, but we're seeing increases along normal trends - so there is basically just more of everything in terms of protocols in terms of demand.

Torrents, however, are particularly network unfriendly because of the number of connections and the nature of P2P that just saturate bandwidth connections, in a way that other traffic does not. So it's a quick win to try and target torrents to bring demand down as quickly and effectively as possible. Also, torrents are not generally a download one absolutely needs right now, we're usually prepared to wait a while. So it's a choice between a heavily shaped torrent during the day, or a much faster torrent running over night. Either way you're most likely going to enjoy the content around the same time (with less frustration of having to see a very slow torrent download in the corner of your screen)

I'm just so happy with my 4meg Business account :D. I s'pose I don't use for the purposes that many of the guys around here used it for. I don't stream or watch online, I only download my movies and series via upload links and watch whenever I can - so there's the difference. I don't think our current infrastructure can sufficiently cope with the instantaneous gratification (for want of a better description) that is required by most users.

My 2c.
 
Furthermore I simply hate the fact that my pc is part of a network as in torrents/p2p. That some other pc downloads bits from mine and so on, it's just not not on.

Man, I feel like I was told torrents aren't the problem, don't be stupid for suggesting some forms of torrent control, and now you are saying it does indeed make a big difference. With your explanation, I feel my suggestion of an account which gives httpdownloads unshaped but torrents shaped into the ground somewhat of a justification. But I'll leave that there.

What I do think, however, is that without any physical, actual incentive, the downloading culture established on the admittedly great afrihost network (where everything was basically unshaped) won't change. You will get demands to return to previous service levels, but if there is no actual incentive to turn off your downloads, why go through the effort?

Okay, seeing as we are in the business accounts section, I'll ask for an incentive scheme to stop people from plugging the network. As a home user, I'll ask for incentives as some kind of acknowledgement for me, not downloading during business hours, but still being penalised like those who do.

I think having more than one person answering your questions does lead to confusion. Unfortunately. Not the first time I've felt that you guys kind off talk against each other.

We're actually sitting next to each other, so we discuss what we're saying before we say it, along with our Twitter and Facebook reps to ensure there is a single message going out to all clients. But we each have our own way of articulating things, I guess.

I think all ideas have some merit, it's often down to practicalities, available resources and what solutions are most effective without introducing new levels of complexity to our systems. Our main concern is keeping costs and overheads as low as possible so that we never have to alter our pricing.

That is also one of the reasons why torrents are such network killers. Each PC on the network is making multiple incoming and outgoing connections. Really hampers the networks performance to manage all that traffic and admin :(

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. As Afriman said, torrents and the nature of torrents are network unfriendly. Even if we upgraded a the infrastructure. There would probably come a time when we have the same discussion over torrents.
 
There is definately something up with the Afrihost network and Apple streaming. My friend has a 20Mb sync, and used a 1Gb free account from Afrihost and we couldn't stream trailers in HD. I have the same problem with my 10Mb line when using AppleTV device.
Used to work fine, but now it's been 3-4 weeks since it got busted.

Sorry for the streaming issues you've been having. We'll need to troubleshoot the issue with you. We aren't reporting any issues.

Must be all the torrents from the other business users. Just kidding. Why not do a traceroute.
 
Morning all

I'm really sorry that we're letting so many clients down with these latency issues :( The network does seem to be normalising at the moment - we're busy hunting down the exact cause of this issue.
