Afrihost Business Uncapped Feedback

Hi Afriman

Just a quick comment...

I have been on this 2Mbs Business Unshaped Uncapped account for 1 week today... and it has been 100% perfect.
Apart from a twitch.tv hiccup, not a single stutter or issue. Full throttle 24/7.

The most awesome part of this whole new setup, is that it requires no management of any sort from me... I do not have to babysit what is done and when on this line now. Even during office hours I do not have to delay any updates or Dropbox syncs and such... no more having to choose either one or the other online activity... they can ALL be done at the same time and without any prolonged "shaping" penalty as before. I do not have to leave my modem off for 30 minutes every other day any more to be able to browse again during the week... in fact, nothing has had to be done at all over the past 7 days, no nursing intervention, no stress, no troubleshooting fuss, nothing at all... and it has just worked.

If this remains just like it is, for the foreseeable future... well, as i have said before, you will find an almost evangelical me praising this product.

THIS is the interwebz just as it should be.

Watching closely .... I may just go this route too .............

Quick question, is it possible to download while gaming on the 2mb business uncapped?

It is, but you need to check if your router has some kind of QoS management. Then stick your gaming ports into the list at the highest priority. For the upload/download speeds that you have to configure in QoS, make the values around 85% of your actual line speed. Don't make it the actual values.

I have not found an ISP that will do this very well on your behalf. Best to prioritise you own traffic.

Is it a line/data fault?

Line. And I know they have to wait for Telkom now, but this long without any feedback from either them or Telkom whatsoever, is ridiculous. I cannot believe we're being forced to accept this level of service in South Africa, as this is the norm.

Afrihost tempts you into having your line with them, as you get the bundle discount, but besides this, there is no good reason to have it with them, as a fault is logged with Telkom anyway, and then I need to start dealing with Telkom myself to get stuff sorted.

Why have the middle man, except saving the money? Maybe people should be warned more explicitly against this before signing up for bundles - transparency is key to good service.

Hi again people,

Thx a million AfriMan, Chevron and Zertop!
I turned protocol prioritisation off, and it is working like a charm!

I read about this feature before, but thought it was 'turned-off' by default.

Have a good weekend all!
JC

It's a pleasure.

As far as I know the feature is active by default, to protect business owners. We assume that private users will deactivate the setting (being generally more tech savvy.

Is something up in the Edenvale area. My ADSL died about 4PM for 20 mins. Since it came back on it is chronically slow. Having to resort to 3G.

There was no Telkom fault logged over the weekend. However, there may be exchange maintenance or upgrades in progress. So far, this seems to really affect performance poorly while in progress :(

Youtube still buffers like mad at 480p.......

And there I thought everything would be fine after this whole crap episode, yet streaming video buffering still sucks as badly as what it was before. How come others can stream 720p or even 1080p with no issues on a 4Mb line, yet we still sit with issues?

In my experience this is usually down to the line. We can't really differentiate between users (nor would we want to). The major variable is always the latency and throughput on the line, as well as intermittent packet loss :(

Ya dude. I don't mind issues. They happen. What I mind is lack of support and AH don't seem to shine in this area. Not had a response to anything via any medium.

Friday night is my jamming session on line with my mates. Was really peeved that I had to give it up last night. Looking like I will have to can tonight too.

Sigh...

Trying WebAfrica in a mo. Just need to top up my account quick. If that works - then an AH issue. If it does not work, then I will swap out my router and see if that could be the issue. If still no resolve then it is out of my control and have to wait for some support person somewhere to look into it.

All my Roku's are behaving funny with this dodgy internet too. Even when using Plex, the Roku keeps popping up with "Please check internet connectivity", so I am taking flak from my family too.

I'm sorry to hear that you're having such a battle. We generally do try to be as responsive as we can, but we know that of late we've been off our game. We're still in the process of training and deploying additional staff to help us bring our response times back to what they should be consistently :(

Resynced the line speed back up to 8Mb in Clientzone and Youtube buffering issues are almost gone.

Screw you Telkom, your tech was supposed to be at our place within an hour of him phoning me on Thursday morning. Guess what, I am still waiting.

All the useless prick did was drop the line speed down to 4Mb. I resynced it back to 8Mb, and just you dare drop it down again without actually physically checking the lines and connections.

I have sent an email to the Critical Care dude who is helping me. Not impressed at all.

Sorry to hear that. Telkom do unfortunately drop line sync without notice if they feel it will stabilise performance or reduce congestion :(

My problem appears to be resolved.
Support tested and did something and my ping had dropped to equal my WebAfrica account.

The dropouts were not ISP related however. I spend hours testing every ethernet connection in the house. Started at the Netgear 16 port in my rack and worked through the house. Found the problem on the 6th 8 port switch that connects the kids rooms.
My daughter had unplugged her ethernet connection to go sit in the lounge with her notebook. My 9 year old boy plugged it into the switch (so both ends in the same switch). Sigh... Removed the cable and all is stable again.

Thanks to the guys that offered me accounts to test with. Some real awesome peeps on this forum!

Glad to hear it got resolved :)

Please could 4mbps users check their routers. Mine is syncing at 3072. Come back from shopping to find my connection unable to even browse MyBB. Have to use my phone to post this.

If you've run the Magically Fix My Line feature, it will often drop your sync to the most stable sync rate. If you run it again, it will reset back to the highest possible sync.

Also, Telkom occassionally drop the sync rate of everyone on a congested exchange to relieve the strain. So if there is an issue like this in your area, they may have done so :(

BS. Unless Afrihost are purposely given lower priority than unbundled ADSL. If this is the case then I'd rather move providers.

We don't know that this is the case at all. Many ISPs do line management. Aside from it being grossly unfair, it would be a massive task for Telkom to manage priority in this manner.

I've had only two isolated cases where something like this happened, and Telkom themselves were not able to explain how this was possible. I think it comes down to physical issues we have no control over, but it generally a one in a million scenario :(

I had a similar experience when moving my line to Afrihost. My sync rate didn't drop but my line performed as if it were a 2Mbps line... No amount of troubleshooting could provide a reasonable explanation for what had transpired.

Moved my line back to Telkom with the assistance of AfriMan who had it expedited. Once the line was officially back under Telkom's management (2 days or so) my internet experience was back to normal.

When we enquired with Telkom, they could not explain this. So I don't think it's anything deliberate, just some inexplicable technical glitch :(

Thanks for this post. This is exactly why we moved away from punitive throttling and shaping, because it's so difficult for a client to figure out how to "get out of jail".

When we researched how overseas ISPs do it, we found that they use the demand based shaping system over punitive measures as it ultimately utilises resources more efficiently, and client ultimately get a better experience.
