A 4Mbps line WILL get around 3.5-3.8Mbps actual TCP throughput, not full 4Mbps.
A 4Mbps account is a different story, as these often do provide full 4Mbps of perceived throughput, assuming the line speed is somewhat greater than 4Mbps. My Mweb 4Mbps account used to do around 5Mbps constant peak... I knew this trend wouldn't last - these days the same account won't surpass 3.6Mbps even on a 10/20Mbps line. For this reason you may want to skip them as an ISP if you've been considering it

Interesting. I can't comment on how other ISP's do it, but we do allow very short bursts above your rate limit for best performance, so you can get close to a "perfect" line performance if you're say on a 10Mbps line running a 2Mbps account. The closer you get to matching account and line, the more overheads come into play though. I don't think it can ever match perfectly though.

AfriMan,

I have searched everywhere, and can't find what I am looking for...

What are limits on smtp.mtnbusiness.co.za?

Max Email Size, Max Recipients per Email & Max Emails per Hour\Day?

Thanks.....

As far as I can recall the official limit is 3MB. This is in our AUP somewhere I think :)

Ok, so had the chat with Oscar. Many thanks.

We have decided to do a long term set of tests, and monitor this over a period.

I think we have plotted a good way forward.

Thanking you kindly for your intervention.

Glad that it was all worked out in the end. I really believe that it's all about communicating. Oscar really is one of best and brightest guys (but all our guys really do rock) ;)

Must thank AfriMan for the great customer support, hope your being compensated greatly for this @ Afrihost.

Haha, happy clients are the best compensation. Gian rewards me in donuts for every happy client he finds out about :)

You and -J should ask Gian to take the team paintballing, get some frustration out the Window
My line is performing like a beast, im actually setting limits on my downloads to not feel like an internet douchebag 0.o

Afriguy,

Would it be possible for you guys to look into allowing us to terminate a Static IP over 3G?

I have a Static IP account on DSL and I also have 4X Afrihost 3G accounts, I would like to set it up so when DSL goes down my Static IP can reconnect over my Afrihost 3G....

Just a thought.

Definitely would be a cool thing to do, but I can't promise we'll have something like that anytime soon. For the moment we have static IPs on business and that seems to have satisfied the call for static IP options for now.

As more businesses move to Mobile though (and Mobile failovers) we'll probably see more demand.

Streaming vids STILL giving hassles....

I've had a ticket open with them since the 1st of this month in regards to the fact that the 1GB free capped account can stream Twitch at high or source smoothly, while the 4Mbps business account can hardly even manage medium and sometimes low for the same stream at the same time.

After many tests they have now started asking MTN about it as they cant deny it with the amount of proof I've provided.
But this has meant that i have to call/message them daily otherwise they don't update me or forget about it (as some of the staff have done).

If anything comes of it I'll update on this thread, as everything else runs at line speed 24/7 on the business account.

Same with me. Everything else is 100% with the line and line speed. Torrents download at an average of about 450k/sec, game updated from STEAM have peaked at 1.6MB/sec a few times, no other issues at all with any websites, emails, etc.

Any online streaming videos from any source sucks hairy gorilla gonads though.
