Guys... Which wireless ADSL+ router would you recommend? Would be connecting PC, Xbox & Media Streaming box... Plus 2 phones on and off

I've tested this on a 10Mbps Business account, viewing it at source quality buffered a lot :( Looks like this stream is pretty bandwidth intense.

What's the rest of your streaming like?

I can stream youtube 720p with about a minute of buffer ahead (which exponentially grows depending on the time of the video). Downloads are good, XBMC is good, torrents work just fine, Windows Updates just fine... basically everything aside from Twitch is just splendid!

Whatever you do, don't get a Telkom D-Link 2750u router. I have one and it's pretty terrible from time to time. Definitely not designed for gaming or excessive use. It's more of a "family" cheap router. Go for something with 450mbps dual-band 5GHz minimum for a fairly decent wireless router.

EDIT: Streaming seems a better now with buffering only every 30 seconds or so. Either something was changed, or gets better after a certain time.

This is the stream on 20Mb Business, seems ok but the quality doesn't look like 1080p - the images are very soft. Using Source, dropped frames was me alt-tabbing to open snipping tool for the screenshot.

We see a lot of mixed results around the site you've mentioned. If there's a central point of feedback, via email is best, I can have this looked into with our team.
Have we run troubleshooting with you before?

Yes, I was dealing with Kyle (critical care), but all that happend was Telkom cut my line. I need these issues resolved, so whats the next step, other than cancelling?

Drop me a PM and I'll see where things are with Critical Care. Let's get this back on track so we can figure out how to improve your experience.

There are some really good models out there. We supply the Netgear DGN2200, which I've used. It's a great router, solid value for money. Also ADSL2+, which is great if Telkom is making 20Mbps available in your area as per their announcement.

The are plenty of good brands hough, D-Link, Zyxel - also hear good things about TP-Link.

Any news on why some of us struggle to watch 720p or 1080p Youtube vids on 4Mb+ lines (mine is a 6MB connection and struggling for almost 2 months now)?

This is getting rediculous now.

Hey Afriman. i'm having no joy with torrents on my 2meg business account. i have great performance on everything else and i'm very happy but torrents are non existant no matter what time of the day. Are torrents blocked on business accounts and are there any limitations as to hoiw the unshaped nature of a business account works that i should be aware off. Thanks so much.

Afriman, on the 6mbit business uncapped. Would YouTube hd and netflix stream actual hd?

If the line is a 10mbit. So obviously line can handle the 6mbit.

i can honestly say that my 10mbit line streams hulu hd and netflix via unotelly quite well.

It depends on the service and the compression and traffic system they use. I think for full HD, you need around 8Mbps. This allows your service to burst at higher speeds and buffer ahead in the video (so not a constant 8Mbps). But it really depends on codec, etc. I've seen 720p HD streaming work nicely on 4Mbps (with nothing else running). For Netflix, we need a full 8Mbps to have a smooth experience on highest quality.

I haven't tested Hulu much, but Netflix has generally worked well when I have tested. I don't use it regularly though, but I'll be testing this more as well on Uncapped and Business.

I am not sure that this is a general problem at all. My own YouTube tests have been absolutely perfect, even when I drop my line to a 4Mbps rate limit with shaping active. I don't believe we are acting on YouTube at all, and everything I've tested, at full HD has been testing well.

We need to do more troubleshooting so that we can replicate what you are experiencing. If the problem is with the account, then I should be able to connect with your account and have the same poor experience. I think that would be a good start. PM me so we can run that test.

What's really bugging me is that I have a similar issue, during the day I have no stream issues other than the norm(Twitch) but at night my streaming is totally worthless on everything, but everything else is running fine(games, torrents, direct downloads etc)

Have you run any diagnostics on this? It sounds like it might be area-based congestion :(

I'm also thinking that it might be but I have switched out accounts and they work fine when my stream is lagging on my Afrihost account, another funny thing is that it seems to be very intermittent as sometimes at night my streaming picks up at around 11PM-ish....... going to do some testing this weekend as I'm working at night this week and I will get back to you :). Also I have run tracert and some speed tests when the streaming is poor and there's no indication of congestion.....but I will test this weekend more extensively.

I would like to see those results and the time stamps so I can review the network activity at the time. Comparing the data might be useful if you get different results with another network.
