Hi, AfriGuy. I ordered a 2Mbps business package yesterday, and everything is running fine for me except Torrents. They're crawling along at 11kBps. Is something going on? I thought this service was unshaped.

dark,login to the client zone
click on connections
click on your package
under account overview
then click on on active,to deactivate Business Optimisation "Business Optimisation: Active"

then torrents will run fine in about 10-15min

I think sybertiger is on the right track :)
See if Business Optimisation is enabled.

Youtube streaming STILL sucks.
Even 480p vids are buffering like mad. Tired of this crap now.

What is MTN doing about this?
Or are we going to get the next round of lame excuses and techno jargon and no clear response.

Sorry, but paying a premium price for this product and getting nothing but blah blah blah explanations/excuses because of streaming issues does not cut it anymore.

Everything else works perfectly fine (downloads, torrents, browsing, etc), it is only any online streaming vids that give hassles.

Same issue, been reporting this for months, I now cant even get support. Told I would be called back, it never happens. There has to be a better alternative?

Only other alternative I see is finding another ISP, I have been reading all the other ISP threads, may have found a good ISP, if you can think of a better alternative, I'm all ears....

Speeds have been getting worse and worse this evening.... over the last hour, my download speeds have gone from 900KB/s all the way down to a choppy and unstable 550KB/s (multi-threaded). Streaming is non-existent.

When I do trace routes, latency increases dramatically AFTER the ESR at the exchange, and on the first hop onto MTN network (IPC).
That is all the proof you need AH.... once again, you have over-sold, and now it affecting the highest paying clients - BUSINESS....

DON'T TELL ME TO DO MORE TESTS...
DON'T TELL ME YOU AREN'T SEEING IT ON YOUR SIDE...
FIX IT ALREADY! :(

Just cancel and move somewhere else, when they eventually fix streaming I'll come back to them.

On the 6mbit business uncapped, what is the average torrent /p2p speeds for during day and what speeds during the evenings?

Ps. Taking into account that the adsl line is a 10mbit line, so the line connection is capable of pushing more.

Im planning to move over from OW bussiness platium 10mb to afrihost business 10mb.
Will i get good speeds during bussiness hours?
We are running alot of network dependant programs and need reliable connection.

Well ,it would depend on how close you are to the exchange( I stand to be corrected here)...I would think that you should reach maximum speed of 600kbps+ on a business account...according to afrihost there is no shaping on business accounts at all be it business hours and off peak hours...just my thoughts, I stand to be corrected, someone more tech savvy will provide you with the correct information though...

From my understanding, you could have a 10mbps line but the data package you acquire will determine what speed you will get, meaning 10mbps line + 6mbps package should only reach speeds of 600kbps-650kbps...10mbps line+10mbps package would reach speeds of 1000kbps+...
I hope someone can validate this for me, I hate to be spreading false information to people who want advice...thanks

From my experience with Afrihost over the last 2 weeks hasn't been very reliable...though not everyone has had the same experience as me...so you could be lucky and have a very reliable connection....

My experience with Twitch.tv:

*no audio, includes speed tests

Torrents work brilliantly on AH.

AH are funny sometimes with their network. Toorents run 100%, but simple things like streaming don't work.

For stable I'd rather recommend the 20Meg Web Africa Business account for your 10Meg line:

We've run multiple tests on our side on Uncapped, Capped and Business and I still haven't seen anything to show that YouTube is shaped or not performing as well as it should. I think we need to work with you individually to try to replicate what you are experiencing so we can try to figure this out. Looking at the network generally is not going to give us specific enough data to locate where the issue is.

Same issue, been reporting this for months, I now cant even get support. Told I would be called back, it never happens. There has to be a better alternative?

You will definitely get some feedback. I got your PM and I will follow this up for you :(

This is mostly correct, I just want to add that torrents are never a reliable indicator of throughput. Remember that your experience is also dependant on how others limit their uploads, whether the seeder you are paired with has the entire file. You can sometimes get an indication of throughput if you stack up 20 torrent files and happen to get a good pairing on a few of them, but it's also possible that all of them are in the same state. Torrents have a great way of maxxing out your line potential when you can get it right, but not getting full speed on a torrent is not a reliable indication that there is a throughput problem on your line.
