Two tests: Before 8 and after 8. If there's constantly "high" demand, then Afrihost should redefine what "Standard" demand is. What I am seeing is throttling not contention. I didn't test right after 8:00 today, but I've seen it on many occasions at exactly 8am your speed suddenly drops

You may see a sudden drop in speed, but remember that like road traffic, network traffic is surprisingly sudden. Everyone may not decide to all check their mail or download their torrents at the same time, but across tens of thousands of users it looks a lot like that. The contention between 7:50am and 8:10am, for example, while show a dramatic change. In those numbers, people generally get the same idea at the same time :(

It's not really rocket science, though, is it? How about you stop signing up new ADSL customers until you have sufficient capacity?

From an international provider and yours, makes no diff. Funny thing is from about midnight it downloaded until about 6 this morning at a good rate.

Suppose will wait until the issues in the North are sorted and then update
 
Afriman , is it best to use your NNTP ? Is there any specific port and how many concurrent connections is good ?

What is the nntp server address

It could likely be related, it's hard to test when there are known issues :(

The real benefit is that our service is free if you're on our network and we use a well established service.

Was good this morning, but has gone bad again. This is during BUSINESS hours on a business account. It's not acceptable. I do actually use this account for my business as well.

200 days is not bad, how good is this news server with regards to DMCA takedowns, is it immediate or delayed?
Delayed being better of course....
I know tweaknews is excellent with regards to that, I hardly ever had an issue with missing articles or blocks or out of server retention....

The server sits on Highwinds, not really sure about the DMCA policies.
I personally use our news server as a backup, hardly see any missing articles.

Sure, but then please tell your customer service consultants to stop blaming Telkom when it's clearly a Afrihost issue. The consultants I spoke to yesterday kept saying how it's Telkom's fault and I need to phone them and tell them to "Disable the self install option on the ADSL port" which means absolutely nothing.
 
Just a note that business bandwidth tanked around mid-day here in Cape Town. 40kb/s. It would appear that SSL transactional data is being severely impacted (above other protocols). Just thought I'd mention it.

Update:
Thought I'd try something: I can torrent a test file at 225kb/s (on a 10mb line), that's several orders of magnitude faster than I can send a file via an SSL encrypted proxy. That can't be right, guys. During business hours? :wtf:

Anybody else having an issue with SSL protocol-based data transfer at the moment?
