Afrihost Capped ADSL Feedback (MTN) - New beginning

It wasn't only you tube, facebook. local news sites and general browsing was affected. At one stage on Saturday evening all attempts to browse yielded constant dns errors.

It seems for some people it was pretty much everything, and for others mainly YouTube.

We the other services affected possibly international. Do you know for sure if there was a difference between local and international?

Local AND international equally borked.

Nothing worked... browsing impossible, skype forget it, teamviewer nogo, google services AWOL, email nada, all tits up.

But Afrihost has been doing this for months now, especially on a Monday and then you land with the repetitive damage control speeches.
So what is it actually that consistently "breaks" over weekends?

Usually weekends are actually better, so it was not surprising to see reports that demand was down and latency was stable and consistent across multiple tests in all 3 regions. So the client feedback right now doesn't make sense, and we need to figure out why.

Whatever happened this weekend is not the same demand related issues we've seen in the past weeks :( (or at least that would be my guess, the really clever people in the network team would know better)

Well for me they are the GOLD STANDARD in determining how badly an ISP performs. How do you think I ended up getting internet from you in the first place? I tested it and it worked... now it doesn't so now what... its not my ADSL line, so what can you say now.... Ohhh what's that... nothing, silence, except excuses.

Instead of jabbering on with excuses here, why not get up from your chair and tell your boss to stop playing golf, cancel his lunch appointment and do some work for a change, i.e. phone up MTN and tell them they better fix their crapbone...

Busy organizing another ISP as soon as I am off the phone, haven't got time for crap anymore.

I think regardless of whether I am in my chair or not, firstly, the people who need to be focussed on the network already are. Gian is actually not out there living the high life, himself and our other shareholders are all elbows deep in working on a solution for this. So running around screaming (by me) will only distract people from what they should be doing, which is sort out our network. MTN are also involved, as our shareholders and all of our sentiment and online reputation reports are going into the mix to ensure that everyone to the technical guys up to big shots in the boardroom know exactly how what is happening affects all of our reputations and relationships with our clients.

My job is to post whatever information I have here and to collect more information to feed back into those structures. So I think I can do much more good sticking around here - I certainly would not know where to start with the technical stuff.

This.
I eventually reset my router which resolved the dns errors, however browsing both locally and internationally remained worse than dial-up.

Thank you for the offer however, it's not about me - it's for all affected users.

I definitely can't make a blanket offer like that, but I would not be surprised if Gian and our other directors find a way to thank clients for their support in some way - I couldn't say what that would be.

So it could, possibly, be related to the test role-outs of the secret new system that was meant to be an improvement....
Not Quoting or paraphrasing any one here, just speculating on the above speculation :)

To give you guys at Afrihost an idea of how bad things are. My mom called me over the weekend, let me add my mom is old and know very very little about the internet and how it works. She asked me what is wrong with her internet, i explained to her that the people who provide the product can't provide the product. Her response, please call other people to give me better internet for tomorrow. I said sure mom and asked my friend to go set up a WA account for her.

Now guys i'm sure you get lots of flack here from the tech savy userbase but when users like old ladies are starting to see that your "internet is broken" I'm sure you're facing a turning point where your business is now in jeopardy.

That's definitely an indication to us that something is wrong, though strangely I also often meet people who say things for them are great when I tell them I work for Afrihost. This is another reason to stress that we should always focus on our own personal experience rather than speak generally for the network or other users. We don't ignore or disregard feedback, everything is collated into high level reports so that our management and team understand how our clients feel and what they are potentially experience, sources from social media, blogs, support chats and forums.

Unless something happened that I am not aware of, I don't think so. As far as I am aware, the testing is in a quarantined environment and should have no effect whatsoever on our current backbone. If that is not the case, hopefully that will be made clear during the course of the day.

GMail won't load.... eventually after countless "This conversation could not be loaded" it loaded the e-mail I was trying to access.
Thanks Afrihost... this is it... I have had enough.

Hi,

For me browsing and torrents were OK. Browsing was maybe a bit slower than usual, but still usable. I don't use Youtube, so nothing for me there.

For me it was Netflix. During Saturday night and all Sunday, Netflix was buffering every 5 min, which itu usually does not.

Regards

P.S. 10 Mbit line Cape Town

I know you this a reply to someone else - but my experience was as follows:
Pretty much everything for me didn't work. Connect to vpn which routes me through an overseas location and then youtube etc worked (except mybb android app).

Weekends have NOT been better - if anything, Monday mornings mybb lights up like a Christmas tree due to issues over the weekend.

My currently plan is I'm signing up to a secondary ISP, the better of the two by the end of this week will stay. My wife is at home sick and I don't have Dstv, we rely 100% on streaming our TV. So I'm forced to shell out from my pocket to have decent internet in the mean time.
