Afrihost Capped ADSL Feedback (MTN) - New beginning

I've been an Afrihost client for a hell of a long time but these days even when according to them everything is running great it just isn't. Constant niggles here then there, inconsistent streaming... I've cut the cord so I stream everyday and some days are better than others. It used to be consistantly stable and fast it just isn't anymore. I would notice that at peak times thing go a little pear shaped but because im on a capped account I expect to be mostly sheltered from it. I don't know but i'll give it a month or two and maybe try out other ISPs, Afrihost just doesn't seem te same to me anymore.

Same here, but I guarantee you, in month or two it will must be different problems. It's been like that for the past year!

Yeah, its been like a year. I'm like an abused girlfriend I just forgive them everytime because they used to be good to me. But like John Legend sings: "But Im tired of living this lie, its getting harder to justify"

Hehe think he was talking about ADSL in that song if im not mistaken.

Morning everyone

I think most of the posts here related to international connectivity. At the moment we don't have more info on what is happening, but from client reports what users could be experience is little to no international connectivity and possibly also latency on international traffic. We don't believe this is related to the hosting issues we've had, but until we know more, we'll keep looking at every possibility until we find the cause. What we do know is that international traffic dropped off in all 3 regions around the same time, suggesting that this is a network problem and not related to cables (we don't use Seacom, so that is also not likely to be a factor).

I'll post more info when I have it. I have had a few people report that switching their DNS to Google DNS seems to improve their experience. If anyone on this thread can confirm for me, that would be a great help.

There don't known what there doing problem don't get fixed in 3 month no backup plane disgusting the worst support in Africa
Sorry what support send a traceroute?

Looks like international should be back to normal now. Please test and post in the thread if you can.

I as forced to switch to my telkom account again last night and it is, and was, working fine, so I am not switching back to Afrihost until I get the all clear here that everything is running smoothly.

For over a year now I have been having to pay two ISP's for capped data, just to ensure redundancy. Surely that should be an ISP function and not up to the user to have to spend twice as much, just for a slightly increased reliability and redundancy on a basic service.

All our tests on a normal Telkom line in the North and East show that traffic is back to normal (which should cover both international cables) so I'm pretty sure the issue is resolved.

And the fact that you don't test in the South where the majority of the users are complaining speaks volumes.
But at least this time the status was changed to RED, I guess someone Important in the north complained.

Yes, from last night at about 8pm images and stylesheets randomly stopped loading - especially noticeable on twitter. Changing to Google's DNS resolved this immediately. Gives the impression there is some sort of static caching that went FUBAR - do you have a static image cache caught up in the Gallo Manor meltdown?

That's why I did ask for users to report results here. We do test in the South but our team member is not online right now. However the North and South use WACS as the primary international breakout point so it's reasonable to assume that performance (as far as international goes) would be similar. But please test and let me know.

It's definitely not something we can rule out, in terms of the Gallo Manor issue affecting either DNS or traffic in some way, though generally one would think they would not be related, especially because our DSL traffic breaks out at IPC in a different DC. We still seem to be seeing some intermittent problems at Gallo, while international traffic is back to normal, so I really couldn't say with any confidence if they are related or not :(

What's happening with double data come end of June? Will it be scrapped or is there a gonna be another extension?

At the moment I'm paying R550 for a 4mb 75+75 package - If DD is scrapped, that would mean that I'm paying R550 for 75GB of let's face it, sub-par data, given the recent AH issues.

No plans have been made around this yet :)

Ok, as long as fair notice is given regarding the decision so that cancellations can be made before it's too late.

We'll keep everyone as up to date as possible, but I have a feeling - and this is purely conjecture on my part - that Double Data isn't going anywhere soon. :)

If that's the case, then neither am I.
Just fix the current latency problems and keep it fixed, please.

If the fact that your trophy cabinet is missing an entry for 2015 is not a kick in the balls, then nothing is.

We're definitely feeling that one. On one hand, I think we kinda knew that we weren't in the running, but to see how far we'd fallen down the rankings was definitely a shock to the system. And we're already pushing, and going to be pushing very hard to claw our way back up.

Well we are already 1/3 of the way into the year and so far you have only managed to slide back to where you were at the end of last year before the IPC update. And selling us Double Data insurance in the form of Afrihost+, only to continue supplying Double Data but with a constant threat of stopping, just makes for more dissatisfaction.

I am now paying what I was paying, plus paying for Double Data Insurance and then on top of it having to pay for Data from another ISP to cover Afrihosts Down time. You went from cheapest and best ISP to most expansive and worst, when you add up all the costs.

I wouldn't say it's Sword of Damocles hanging over our Client's heads... If for some reason Double Data does end, there will probably be a drop in ADSL prices as has happened in the past. Still some time until we make the announcement, but I don't think we'll disappoint you guys.

Things started going south for Afrihost after MTN bought a controlling stake. ;)

Having said that, I must be in the minority, but Afrihost ADSL data has been working fine for me. I don't use it for live streaming or gaming (I have an IS account for that :D), but browsing, youtube and downloads work great.
