Afrihost Capped ADSL Feedback (MTN) - New beginning

Afripeeps unless someone from Afrihost can give me a logical explanation why my iOS downloads won't go past 30KB/s unless I go through a VPN yet non of my other services are effected Im taking this to the ASASA.

You guys advertise capped accounts as unshaped yet its as clear as daylight that for over a month certain protocols are being heavily managed certain times of the day.

I'm tired of empty promises of feedback and your team are close to fixing it.

And no I'm not in the south...

Get a petition going, I'll happily sign it! Its time to light a fire under Afrihost's backsides!

Thank you for the reply,

I'm really sorry about that David.
I'm not sure whats happening here.

I will go back to my senior managers about this.

Have a great day and please let me know if I can help with anything else!

Warm regards

Clayton

The last useless bit of feedback I received on Monday, been promised feedback ASAP on that ticket now for nearly two weeks. Clearly your senior management simply don't give a fck either.

Judging by the way they deceitfully control the network status page that's quiet evident.

My main reason for cancelling Openweb Uncapped. Couldn't use my line during the day.

Uncapped account are understandable. All ISP's uncapped accounts unless it's premium are shaped according to network usage patterns. This is however a capped account and is clearly advertised as followed:

What you see is what you get

Sometimes the simple things in life are the best. Our Capped DSL is exactly that: simple, straightforward and superb. You get Premium unshaped broadband, and you always get what you paid for. Our Capped DSL accepts up to 5 concurrent connections, all of which can connect to the internet at the highest speed your line can go. Which means that everyone gets maximum line performance for their browsing, streaming, gaming and everything else. Just logon and go nuts.

what always annoys me is the line "Have a great day and please let me know if I can help with anything else!"
Are they trying to imply that they have fixed the problem, despite not actually having done anything, or is it an honest admission that they can't actually help you but you are welcome to ask about anything else, as long as it has nothing to do with your internet account.

Proof..

Without VPN see download speed

Same app with VPN as can be seen in top left corner that I'm connected.

Shaping?

My sister got apple product now. What are you trying to download? So I can test it on her device, if I'm getting the same problem.

Morning everyone, seems like most of the posts are around the issue of download speeds and whether we are shaping based on direct download vs VPN experience.

To be honest, I don't have an answer. We are definitely not shaping, and what I've seen in the past is that when we see raised contention due to increased demand, some services perform better than others. It may have to do with intrinsic network QoS, which manages the overall network, or the nature of the packets themselves and how they are handled, I really couldn't say on that level and it would probably takes months of investigation to determine if there is an explanation beyond coincidence or general weirdness that explains how this is possible. What I do know is that we don't have any shaping rules in place for Capped DSL, so it's not that one service is shaped and another is not.

I can understand your frustration here, and the need to want to take it further. All I can say is that to my knowledge there is nothing like shaping happening on capped accounts and I am sure that our technical managers and directors will attest to the same. If we did so, it would certainly be contrary to the advertised specs of the product :(

Intrinsic network QoS? That would be shaping.

Quality of service is allowing certain protocols preference over others, that should not be the case with capped accounts.

Or another explanation for intrinsic network QoS would be lack of IPC?

Any network must have some basic QoS or it would be a complete mess. If traffic is not defined and given some basic rules, then nothing would work, whether shaped or unshaped. I think anyone with some networking experience would agree. Even your home router has some basic QoS active in order to manage the network, or it would simply fall over.

Shaping rules would be defined over and above this, which is not the case.

Due to the fact using a VPN pushes the download to full speed I would rule out IPC. Only other logical explanation for that is once the download is masked behind a VPN in bypasses whatever rules are in place on the network and opens up the download to max line speed.

I disagree with you.

A network wouldn't simply fall over if no QoS was in place as long as there is sufficient capacity.
