Afrihost Capped ADSL Feedback (MTN) - New beginning

I think that's a bit uncalled for. I know we keep it fast and lose on the forums, but I think we can maintain some basic respect here.

Sorry to hear that you're cancelling - wish you the best :)

I think promising something and delivering something else, but still collecting the check is uncalled for. Perhaps even illegal. But I digress.

And as for Gian. His smarmy, 'personal' emails he used to send and his once again ridiculous PR spin on that "state of the network" post makes me    . He sounds Afrikaans so Im sure he understands, and I'm sure he too knows that he needs a good few "oorfluiters"/ "PKs". He's been a very bad boy.

And I'm not "cancelling". I have already cancelled.
I wont be posting in this thread again as I'm no longer an afrihost subscriber.

ENJOY :D

We've posted up a notice a while back outlining these issues, but we'll also posted as much info as we can. You'll see that Gian has also started a thread giving as much insight into what has happened and what will be happening in the future here:

http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthr...twork-and-the-Future-(from-Gian-Visser)/page3

That notice was months late and only went up because people called you guys out here for it and no, he didn't actually. I guess with so much time spinning it becomes natural eventually... Look at that thread you directed me to. Now show me the "insight into what has happened and what will be happening in the future".

Everyone here would really like to know what is to blame for the bad internet experiences these past few months as well what is being done to ensure that it does not happen again.

Yet here we all are, still wondering because you guys are not forthcoming.

Pretty sure threatening or suggesting someone should be physically assaulted is a crime. But hey ...

All the best, buddy :)

I'm pretty sure this has not happened before to my memory. There is a problem between the MTN backbone and the closes Google Cache node. This is being resolved but we may have to wait until tonight for this to be completed. If we get a more specific ETA, I'll post it up here

IF you say so it MUST be so??

Not always to Google, but still the peering issues are there!

Must I go on...?

I dunno if you've read the post Gian made fully. He does give a very clear out line of what will be happening in the future, that we will be launching two different proof concepts for a completely new network experience, and based on client's feedback we'll decide which one we'll be sticking with. This is specifically relieve the congestion that we've been discussing on these threads for ages now, as well as to ensure that we can be more proactive and address problems like this much faster. I'm pretty sure Gian mentions these very specifically in his post :(

Yah... skirt the details again.... just WHAT "proof of concept" are you hinting at???

All presentation, again, and no real substance!

Peering is a constant relationship between two independent networks, which can happen at all kinds of different levels. Sometimes links are slow, sometimes they change as each network makes changes. We did have routing issues to Google a few month back, I'm talking like last year, probably linked to your second link. You first link is not related to Google peering, it's peering with another host network.

On a last note, and I think all the Afrihost users here will agree. With all the issues Afrihost is having perhaps you should man your helpdesk for longer hours and especially weekends, because that is when most of the issues are experienced!

From our point of view, when we get that Friday night tweet, everything goes downhill fast!

As I stated "not always to Google" but you have peering issues, which other ISP's don't have. There is even a whole Thread on it from 2013.

Unfortunately Afrihost has not evolved from these issues.

What details are you looking for here? I can't give specifics unfortunately, but I can say we will be moving our whole client base to the new solution. This will either way include a whole new network plan, new hardware and it will definitely offer clients a new experience. It will also hopefully be able to give us the ability to tailor products more specifically and look at structuring different packages to give more value to clients.

Until we have more details, I don't think I can really say much more :(

I stay in touch with our Help Desk throughout the weekend. Many people will tell you that I still reply to PMS (when I can) through the weekend. I'm also constantly checking my own connection. So I don't walk into the office knowing nothing, I generally monitor threads and social feeds so I have some idea of what happens over the weekend, as do all the guys working in forums and social media.

Then why bother with the PR spin of a CEO message then?

No specifics again... just more magic pixie dust of whatever.

Excuse my lack of enthusiasm.. okay.

Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas any more

So how will this affect people on current packages ito pricing, shaping and throttling?
Will capped and business uncapped remain unshaped?

Unfortunately Afrihost has not evolved from these issues.

Every network has some peering issues. Even before we moved to MTN there were occasional peering issues. These are also not a one-sided thing. Either network can drop the link and affect peering. It is usually means that the network is not inaccessible but now has to reach through a less direct route though other peering links.

I'm sorry, I don't see any specifics in his post at all. We are asking you to state the cause of the problems but I digress. I'm not going to bother pushing the issue because I know its been done to death by others to no avail already. Instead I'll just continue to monitor this thread and do what I said I'll do in Gian's thread.

/People are cancelling. I, myself, am on the verge of cancelling. A pity it is too because you guys really were great years back then. In order to prevent that I don't want to hear promises of improvements, I want to hear the facts. Are you over-subscribed? Are you over-optimizing? Is MTN simply ****?

I don't expect there will be any immediate changes, we want to move clients as seamlessly from what to have to the new system. I wouldn't be surprised if, once we're settled, we offer some radical new alternatives and different ways of customising your product to suit your needs. Whichever concept is successful, we will have a lot more options in the future, which is awesome!

Well to be fair here - I joined AH for the unshaped and unthrottled service. So if that were to change, that would suck a$$.

We have haven't outsold our capacity, we've made several mentions that demand has increased significantly from our existing client base. So while we are taking on new clients, this is not the cause of the congestion we are seeing. I'm not sure what you mean by over optimising, if that means shaping or throttling, then definitely not for capped accounts. MTN is a great network and we've seen great performance over the years we've been with them, but it's now time for us to take the next step given the size of our network and the number of clients we have. MTN are our shareholders, so they are supporting us fully to evolve as a company and service provider.
