Afrihost CAPPED ADSL Feedback (MTN)

Hi afriman.

I have been on stable 4 mb line all month. Was just last night that had issues. Granted that there was a storm going on so that could have something to do with it. I am going to test again today and see.

I'm using Netflix and would ideally like to stay on 4mb.

It's highly possible. Any EMF interference from a storm would affect SNR and Attenuation and cause sync to fluctuate so it's very possible :(

Towards the end of every month the same thing happens in the Cape - slow speeds even though I have an unshaped capped account. Last month Afrihost added a few Gigs of IPC but it is still not enough. IPC is probably the most expensive item in the chain of an ISP other than wages. It therefore makes sense that they will try to buy as little as possible without affecting users. I have a 10Mbps line and usually get 8.7Mbps because of the distance to the exchange. come the end of the month when everyone is frantically try to use up all their CAP and my speed drops to about 6Mbps during peak hours. Most people wouldn't even notice this and so Afrihost thinks they can get away with not purchasing an more IPC from Telkom in the Cape. why give away double the CAP when they know their network can't cope. I am paying for an unshaped account but not receiving one. I will once again be asking for a refund this month.

I have also gone for the capped account not to experience this. Its my first month and yesterday morning i got o.4mbs on my line. First they asked me to test another account...that account shot up to 4mbps..then as soon as i switch to my account it goes down.

After advising them of this they still want to keep on saying it must be with Telkom and i have to contact them..how is THAT possible. If it works fine as soon as I use a different account with the same ISP! I'm in the 50 free atm and when i added the 1gig you get free my speed shot up again to 4mbps.

Very disappointed in this. If my line drops when the gig is finished i'm cancelling my adsl with them. Might aswell just have gotten uncapped then.

Congestion can sometimes manifest after a while on a new connection. So when you change accounts, the connection is reset and the speeds seem normal for 15-20 minutes. Then the demand settles on the exchange and speeds slowly degrade until they settle on where the congestion sits at. But you should see this when you switch back to your other account as well.

Consider a new name for Afrihost?

Hey Afriman,

Why not rename Afrihost to PacketLoss.co.za?

BTW - This is on an Afrihost capped account and it's been like this for ages - I have the stats.

Had this too lately, but was not very noticeable, seeing that their pricing is good. I would however take an IS account over MTN anyday (but the difference is marginal)

Today has been a bad day for me. Actually August has been a bad month for me. They're now telling me to check my micro filters. I don't even know what to think anymore.

Tested with web africa free account. Tried the fix my line and reset ports buttons still only at 2mbps. Gaming seems to have high lag spikes. Netflix buffers. It is definitely the line. My line is with afrihost. Can you please take a look for me? I will pm my details.

I can definitely take this forward for you. Drop me that PM ASAP and I'll get someone on this! :)

Sorry that you're having a bad month. I don't know if you feel the issue is not a line issue, or if you're battling with a longstanding issue.

Drop me a PM so I can check out what has been done so far and advise you as best I can :(

Sorry to see this is not performing as well as it should.

We'll need to see more test results so we can see which parts of the routing are showing consistent packet loss so we can escalate this to MTN. We'll also need to see if we can eliminate the packet loss by trial and error.

Drop me a PM so we can get started ASAP.

Okey Im going to type this now trying to hide the accumulated frustration and irritation of the past 3 days.

Dear Afriguy, Afriman idk, but dear afrihost representative please oh please help me.

I logged numerous faults now telephonically and today decided email approach.

So support ticket would be XIC-667-26616

Okey so I already wrote there I am in no mood to repeat everything basically the line speed is terribly slow. I mean so much so that Im typing ftom my Vodacom mobile data as I cant even load speedtest.net

Okey so the response I got is on your side you saw port errors and session time outs

Then i received the millionth copy paste response "I have resync your line recreate the port etc."

Please switch your router of 2min normal stuff.

So i did that. Manage to load speedtest.net

Tested it cape town saix server

Ping 16ms
Download 1.09Mbps
Upload 0.43Mbps

Okey emailed them back

Now they want me to perform 3 trace rout and 3 speeds test with 3 different accounts.

Im sorry, this service works great for a few days an then non existent for a few days. Im paying you to fix I stuff I do not pay you to make me do varies time consuming tests just to ultimately discover its your issue all along.

Now everyone on this forum knows my love for afrihost, but its becoming substantially difficult to defend a company that isn't performing anymore.

Take over my pc remotely I dont care, just sort this stuff out please like I said it worked and now it doesn't, I didn't change anything so you tell me

This is probably my final post in this thread...

I totally understand your frustration and I do apologise. We do need to get some diagnostic tests results to be able to analyse the results start to zero in the cause of the problem. If connectivity is unstable, then using teamviewer may not be a viable option. It's also better when we work together to get as much information as possible.

Maybe this will work better if you have a live person on the phone assisting you. Drop me a PM and I'll be happy to arrange for this ASAP.

We've chatted a bit on PM about this and I'm sad to hear that you have made up your mind to leave. We're continuing to work on improving services where we can and deliver the best experience. I do sincerely wish you the best, and I'm sorry that we didn't manage to resolve this for you :(

Afrihost know what the network problem is in the Cape. I have asked them to post the problem on their network status page but they don't seem to want to.

I do know that we're seeing some periods of high demand in the early evening in the Cape, but I don't believe that in general this is affecting latency and throughput. But we'll continue to monitor and test to ensure we are managing the network efficiently in the South.

For the first time in 3 weeks things are running as per normal
I was told to test another router which I still need to do.
I cant understand that for the past 3 weeks my service has been beyond cr#p and today its back to normal??????????????
Lets hope it lasts longer than a day.
