Okies.

Well I just got myself a new router today, just to double-check that it's not router related.

Traces don't really show anything, but the throughput tests are pretty clear. I think we need to test further with you. Seems like your account might not be doing what it should be. I know that we can push throughput higher than that, so we'll have to see why it's not working for you.

Again... line issues;

And still zero word of feedback from Afrihost support or Critical Care.
Only the email from them on the 18th August and then silence... not even an acknowledgement of my subsequent email messages.
This was logged with them on the 19th July originally.

There is absolutely zero value in having the line managed by Afrihost. None.

Oh, well, perhaps the line in Telkom's hands again and some assistance from TelkomZA can resolve an issue that Afrihost seems to be happy to ignore.

That definitely should not be the case. We should b doing our best, whether through Critical Care or general Support, to follow up and resolve your queries as quickly as we possibly can. I'm sorry if this didn't happen the way it should have.

Can you drop me PM with an update of what has happened up to now, and I'll make sure this is picked up properly :(

Hi

Thanks AfriMan... no need.

I have unbundled and cancelled... going back to Telkom.

Holy shoot, my usage just shot up 2GB in 2 hours... wtf is going on... how can I use this much when a YouTube video will barely load.

Sometimes bandwidth reports are delayed so we receive them late. Especially if we lose a session unexpectedly and do not receive the "end" packet, which gives us the session total. These can sometimes arrive from Telkom hours or even days later :(

If you're current usage is accurate, but this usage gets lumped on top, it can look like a ton of data in a short space of time :(

4MB line doing 2GB in 2 hours. I'm surprised because I somehow did all that but can't get a stable 100KBps when streaming :? (or downloading, for that matter, so I don't know where this is coming fom)

EDIT: OK, I am going connect the router but block all outgoing traffic.

I doubt that it's outgoing traffic. You also need some outgoing traffic to use the internet properly, so it may make your connection a bit iffy :(

I understand your dilema!

I have a 4mb line and when I max it out I can manager 1.5GB/hour!

This is one of the things I don't like about AH (and another ISP) is the delayed stats.

So, before you go any further in accusing the ISP etc, just bear in mind that sometimes the data is delayed (only with AH and another ISP I've used it seems), so you say 2GB in 2 hours, and you were shocked with the usage because you were having such a kuk experience anyway, but I need to ask;

What were you doing the 2 hours before and after?

Sometimes you just have to average things, then they make sense (doesn't mean I agree with them because if other SP's can do it, why can't they do it!?).

I can't speak for why other ISP do or don't use the method you suggest. Our aim is be be transparent, so we give you the same information we get from Telkom. Averaging out usage ultimately skews reporting and where you could get a very accurate and granular report otherwise, the entire dataset is potentially contaminated. So I think we'd prefer to be open and let you work with the data in a way that makes sense to you.

I have been getting issues since around 5pm today. Slow, and traceroutes are high from the 3rd hop (IPC).

Received feedback from Afrihost, seems there is a Telkom issue in my area.

My apologies but there seems to be a Telkom Outage in the area at the moment -

Which area are you in? I have been unable to let my line sync at 4mbps. It drops to below 2mvps at times. Have tried recreation of ports and fix my line magically buttons. No luck. Line connected but very slow with drops every few minutes then I need to reset the router to connect again.

Towards the end of every month the same thing happens in the Cape - slow speeds even though I have an unshaped capped account. Last month Afrihost added a few Gigs of IPC but it is still not enough. IPC is probably the most expensive item in the chain of an ISP other than wages. It therefore makes sense that they will try to buy as little as possible without affecting users. I have a 10Mbps line and usually get 8.7Mbps because of the distance to the exchange. come the end of the month when everyone is frantically try to use up all their CAP and my speed drops to about 6Mbps during peak hours. Most people wouldn't even notice this and so Afrihost thinks they can get away with not purchasing an more IPC from Telkom in the Cape. why give away double the CAP when they know their network can't cope. I am paying for an unshaped account but not receiving one. I will once again be asking for a refund this month.

Afrihost is up **** creek again this morning. They've really tested my patience this month. I will be requesting a refund.

When I check the IPC reports, there shouldn't have been contention around 5pm and demand only really started to look high between 8pm and 10pm. Could this not be a local exchange issue? Have you already verified that other ISP accounts show now 2nd hop latency problems?

It sounds like the line has an unstable sync. So the profile is set to 4Mbps but the actual sync rate varies. This is usually a distance or cable quality issue. In most cases it's best to drop the sync to a more stable rate to avoid packet loss and latency.

PM me, and I can take a closer look and advise you better :(

Hi afriman.

I have been on stable 4 mb line all month. Was just last night that had issues. Granted that there was a storm going on so that could have something to do with it. I am going to test again today and see.

I'm using Netflix and would ideally like to stay on 4mb.
