Afrihost CAPPED ADSL Feedback (MTN)

Looks like Capped accounts is now on the same level as Uncapped accounts on torrents and NZB news servers. ZERO download speed.

Sorry about that, we are doing our very best to get the upgrades pushed through as quickly as possible.

Our phone lines are definitely up and running. Please PM me if you are still not getting through :(

Surely the upgrades should have been in place so we don't land in this situation, i.o.w proper planning?

The lines were down last night when I sent the post.

We're definitely not blocking torrents at all on network, but speeds could be very poor due to contention :(

We had a plan in place to upgrade at a slightly later stage, but demand spiked faster than we predicted in late September, and we had to go ahead of schedule.

I'll check on that, I wasn't aware that the lines were down but they are definitely up now :)

Funny how some ISP's are up one day and the scum of the earth another day.

If there is a contention ratio with no throttling or port prioritization then all services will be degraded to the same level. Web browsing, downloads, ftp, torrents, streaming etc..

But when you get about zero on torrents and news servers and you can still do a download test and get 9Mbps some one is not telling the truth.

I believe that many of our clients are getting information through our support centre or social media channels and we're very grateful to them for being patient and giving us their faith and trust while we work this out. I think the majority do feel that while we might be experiencing some technical issues, they always have a better overall experience with us and are willing to go on some faith. And we definitely appreciate them for that :)

Specifically, after calling and logging tickets I ended up calling Telkom myself to log a fault with my line. Nothing to do with info from the support centre or social media, purely inept customer support - first hand. My overall experience and treatment by AH was poor from the begining, before the last few weeks issues. I am so sorry I missed the 60 day money back guarantee.

That may be the case on a small local network, but on a massive network of this scale, it's very difficult to predict how services may behave. It depends on a number of factors, and most of those are driven by user behaviour at scale.

I'm sorry that you didn't receive the right level or quality of support. That shouldn't have happened. If you can PM me specific references I can refer this to our QA and Training departments :(

Sorry to hear that you're not using your account. I'm sure that performance will continue to improve and when the capacity goes live it will be back to what we expect.

Well I'm back to using my Afrihost account again (My free Axxess, Vox and WA accounts have run out :() and everything seems to be running full speed again... for now. :)

Just signed up for a free Openweb account now as well in case things get slow again. ;)

EDIT: Spoke too soon. P2P back down to 40KB/s starts out at full speed, but then it seems to get "managed". If I disconnect and reconnect again I get full speed for a few minutes again.

EDIT2: Up to 60KB/s now.

Yup ;)

Remember that contention is a dynamic thing. If it were a ruleset you'd never get full speed, it would be constantly at a specific rate (or lower). It could be that when you reconnect your burst at higher speed but then contention settles it will degrade until the network "settles". We see similar symptoms on congested Telkom exchanges in terms of performance.

The problem is that you are selling your Capped and Business Uncapped as "Unshaped DSL"

Over the last few weeks there has been a lot of "management" taking place on these products i.e. call it shaping, throttling, prioritizing, management etc

But it's not sold as uncontended.

The speeds are still absolutely horrendous today though.

That's correct but I should not be getting 9Mbps on my download test and only 1kbps on my News Server download.

That much I do agree with.
I'm so glad I don't work from home anymore.
I would have dropped Afrihost a long time ago then.

Well, getting 160KB/s now, so close enough to full speed.

I only have about 7GB's left with Afrihost until the end of the month, but the point of this account was to get full speed during peak hours when my uncapped ISP is shaping me. If my uncapped account works better than my capped account during peak hours that sort of defeats the purpose.

Remember that more and more improvements will be seen, all returning to normal as soon as the upgrades have been put in place.
