I noticed over the weekend that it takes an awful long time to re-establish a connection once a session is timed out, felt like a few minutes yesterday. The link itself is fast and stable once up, just the connection phase seems to take long, is anyone else seeing this?

authentication can take sometimes, depends on the amount of authentication requests we're receiving at the time and how quickly we receive those requests off the Telkom network.

Should never take more than a couple of minutes at the most though :)

Dropped my line to 8Mb again, to test, but no difference. Local gives 818KB/s on 8Mb and a solid 1MBps on 10Mb.

Intl Speedtest ;(

Just out of interest, and maybe a bit extreme but what if you activated another account closer to the end of the month so the prorata won't be that much and test with a new account and if that works then cancel the first one all in the clientzone assuming you get full speed on capped?

I was just going to ask him if can I come play at his house, I will bring my own toys :D

hehe, i'll have you know only 3 years back my line was so useless it couldn't even sync at 1mbps
have been on fixed wireless ever since

but all the telkom vans in my neighborhood last year raised suspicion first and then some hope, from not even 1mbps (when 10mbps was already available) straight to 40mbps

first time in a LONG while my queued downloads cleared themselves out, i now need to think about new things to download, seems like a first world kind of problem :D

Hi there NarrowBandFtw, what area and what type of area are you in?

I'm still stuck on 4mb mini-dslam, although it's solid, and have no issues, it's just I want first world problems too :D I've been waiting for 10mb (router say's my line can attain 12mb) since they announced it and TelkomZA say there aren't any plans to upgrade the exchange and time soon.

Maybe I should check if my insurance is up to date, say a puppy ran across the road and while trying to avoid the little bugger, crashed into the exchange, as I drive past it everyday :)

EDIT: What's the line rental on that out of curiosity?

I have a bundle deal with afrihost, R797 per month, the exact line rental portion i would not know, but i think the standalone line rental for 40mbps is quite high, R749 per month

In terms of area, I'm about 20km outside the Cape Town CBD in the Tableview area
About 3 different exchanges in that broad area, all of them now VDSL enabled AFAIK, dozens of MSANs

w.r.t "type of area", well, whole bunch of wannabe jersey shore posers hang out in our beach bars, fair amount of vagrants roam the streets, but i have a postcard view of table mountain from the beach and when i tell people i live in the "northern suburbs" i am told no no it is the "western seaboard" which apparently is less "kommin", and not nearly as snobby as the "south"

..... obviously i interpret "type of area" weirdly :P
