So tell us AH, what is your "cap" with MTN, and when did you hit it?

^^ Seems to be a credible explanation for this nationwide Afrihost orange alert...

Squeezing the last few squirts from your MTN toothpaste tube hey Afrihost, not enough to cover the toothbrush?

Can barely stream 480p YouTube. 6Mbit DSL http://speedtest.ookla.com/result/2718584252.png

More transparency and some official communication regarding the issue would be great. Are we still waiting for the "shaper" upgrades to manage the demand better?

I've been having speed issues for about two weeks now. There's nothing wrong with my line. Whilst I appreciate the feedback from the reps in this thread the standard response with the all too familiar :( smiley is getting old now. What's actually being done, and more importantly how long should we expect this to go on for?

This. I've been happy with AH for years, and then everything started going to **** for me at the beginning of August.

Oh my gosh it is slow tonight (30/09). I'm not even sure why I got a 20Mb/s line. That's money wasted with this performance.:wtf:

Extremely poor performance again tonight. Also noticed that high demand window now increased by an hour? 19h00 till 23h00 ?

Anybody have a test Axxess account?

I know Afrihost bought Axxess and their prices are basically the same as well for the capped accounts. Just want to know if they are also experiencing network problems. If not I might just as well switch to them.

I have an Axxess capped account as a backup... and it outperforms my Afrihost capped accounts. I can even stream without problems, unlike AH.

Get a small capped account from Axxess (maybe some others) and test... keep as backup, with Afrihost these days backups are needed.

EDIT:

Maybe signup for the free Axxess account to test;

Changed my capped account from 400GB to 8GB yesterday afternoon. ISP hunting today. I'm done with AH. Going to give Crystal Web a shot, and if that doesn't work I'll just byte the bullet and go VOX.

Morning guys

Just going to post something similar to what I've posted on Business thread.

We had a pretty dismal performance on the network yesterday, particularly in the North and we definitely know there is an issue. We saw a massive upsurge in demand mid-morning, and that seemed to be consistent throughout the day. It could be related to the other iOS 8 patch released, but we didn't really see that much of the additional traffic going towards Apple services (or at least not that I know of). It seemed to be an upsurge in general traffic.

Our technical director is working with our network team, MTN and some external experts to see where immediate improvements can be made. We did implement some changes yesterday and will be looking at further changes over the next few days to try and get performance back within acceptable ranges. We hope to already see improvement today.

He will also be looking into long term solutions. As I mentioned in the other thread, if that involved capacity upgrades, most of you will know that this is not something that will happen overnight. But if it comes to that, we'll do our planning and research as quickly as possible to get the best results for our clients. But for now the focus is on making the performance what it should be as quickly as possible.

I'll post more info as and when I receive it from the team.

Hey Afriman,

Do you guys know yet what is the cause of this sudden increase in demand? Are a lot more people upgrading to VDSL lines after the price drops or do you guys just have too many clients? :p

There is absolutely NO IMPROVEMENT on my side. Why do I have a capped account again?

Unfortunately simple maths tells you one or two things need to happen for improvements...more IPC capacity or loose enough high usage clients to bring demand down. No amount of QOS trickery will hide the fundamental problem.

Hey Afriman,

We do planning based on the growth in clients, but there are many factors we can't predict. Many people don't have their lines with us. So capped client who goes from 10Mbps to 40Mbps VDSL on a Capped account will show a dramatic change in demand and we won't really know why. We do our best to try and forecast for these, but it is extremely difficult. We also saw Telkom open 20Mbps to ADSL2+ and many clients are also upgrading and seeing increases in demand from there.

If it was just a simple case of getting more clients, then upgrading capacity would be an easy calculation. It's more that demand increases suddenly and we're not sure where the demand comes from when we don't see an equivalent growth in client numbers.

At the moment the network is running within normal limits so you should be seeing decent performance. But if our team are still in the process of rolling out changes, we may see performance improve through the day as well as tomorrow.

We're definitely doing a lot of complex maths based on the demand we're seeing, the growth in clients and what solutions can be viably implemented based on the resources we have. I'm sure that our technical people (who are definitely a lot smarter and more capable than me) will find the best possible solution :(
