Cheaper? Have gone down less then Azure? Very simple systems to use. Better support. Take your pick.

I'll bite... How so?
(sorry for derail)
My server was finally bought back online at 6pm (41 Hours of downtime). However, I am still copying data from the old, mounted backup drive to the new one, and setting all of my services back up
It took another phone call after finding that my server was 70% restored from backup to then find out that they couldn't restore from backup, and wanted to put the 'hard drive' from the virtual machine into a new machine to get it working.
It seems that they are in fact provisioning an entirely new server, and (hopefully) making the old hard drive available to that new server. This means that I will in fact need to recreate and re set up EVERYTHING from the old server - including mail, databases, websites...
@Murmaider
Its not all that complex.
Scenarios that are possible are not that many.
Old vmhdk attached to a new VM with new vmhdk. Thus 2 Disks.
Though I have never seen any issues with VMware that causes a Kernel panic to such an extent that it can't be fixed.
It could also be possible that they have changed the Machine hardware version thus resulting in this but I have never encountered such a case in Vmware and I have gone from Esx to ESXI... Who knows, sometimes special things happen.
Agreed that they could add the additional vmhdk to the new VM, but if the old vmhdk is there, they could just mount it because surely it contains their vm? When going from ESXI 4 all the way to 5.1 you just select the version of the vmhdk when setting up the VM using an existing vmhdk.
This is my confusion around the whole issue, clarity from Afrihost side would be great.
You ever see that upgrade VM Hardware option on the VM options menu?
The pitfall is after you click upgrade hardware version... there is no going back xD especially in the last rolled out update

I don't know the downtime figures of each (so you could be right, but looking online now, i'm seeing quite a few downtime posts for Digital Ocean in the last year)... and at least if Azure had to go down I wouldn't loose everything (http://dfernandez.me/articles/digitalocean_lost_our_data/) as a single checkbox in the Azure panel enables global redundancy.
Awesome. My one vps is 3 years no down time. My VPS has a better uptime than azure cloud.I haven't seen any downtime in the year that I've hosted with Azure.
Azure's support is phenomenal btw. Better than the local guys by far. I had a few migration questions when moving servers and accounts and they were fantastic. Called back quickly, followed up properly, updated statuses on the support page for the incident with detailed info, and walked me through the process over the phone.
Azure is super simple.. so I don't get that argument.
Yeah they need to use hooks and sale gimmicks to get clients. Once your hook is done, enjoy spending more for lessRegister on Bizspark (if you are eligible) and for the first year you get R1200 per month free. Still haven't paid for the hosting... and looking at the small and extra small instances, i'm not seeing how it's expensive given the scale of what is available with azure.
Noop, still not convinced, but that doesn't matter. We're all going to have our preferences.
:wtf: - another stunning Enterprise Quality Feature I'm guessing.
Hmmm I don't see any notifications on Afrihost's network status but 2 of our cloud servers are crazy slow. Can't remote desktop onto them.
