Afrihost giving away more free ADSL data next week

pity their service is still so s!ht. Me wonders if giving away 1gig (choke fusking choke) gonna make a diff. People like free, and 1gig will work , but do something about "service" levels Gian!!!

I also want to know. The 2nd time AfriHost did this, one couldn't, because only 1 account per telephone line
 
I don't have a problem with their service levels, yet.
However, a question I'd like answered is : ''When will they start allowing for EFT payments, and not only Debit Order or Credit Card''?
3 months ago I had a reply from Gian directly, to an e-mail query I'd sent, to say they were looking into how to incorporate it into their current setup. (words to that effect).
Last I checked about a week ago, still only the 2 methods of payment available & not interested in using either of them.

Yeah, I asked him the same thing on 2 occasions, only with direct Deposit. Because of the lack thereof in their system, I buy my gigs from Axxess

I raised the same point last week (interested in a 50GB account) & received the following as part of a long justification:

Unfortunately we will probably never accept monthly EFT payments for the month to month contracts. However, we are developing our system to allow EFT payments for our Prepaid bandwidth @ R49 per GB. We will be launching this as soon as the dust has settled somewhat (or at least been somewhat controlled!)

R49/GB? I'm staying with Axxess R19/GB and EFT payments.

@ least I won't continue to wait for something that's just not going to happen.

Btw, Openweb also allow for EFT's & charge the same as Axxess.

Ottawa - Canada's industry minister vowed on Thursday to overturn a regulatory ruling that effectively put an end to small internet service providers offering unlimited downloads.

"It is unacceptable that this decision stands and we will reverse this decision," Industry Minister Tony Clement told the House of Commons.

"It is important to protect consumers, innovators and creators, as well as small and medium-sized businesses," he said.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) ruled last week that telecommunications giant Bell can charge wholesalers that lease bandwidth on its network based on usage.

Many of these smaller service providers offered their customers unlimited internet access at set rates, relying on bandwidth Bell and other big operators are required to lease to them.

Online petition

Major telecommunications firms Bell and Telus, as well as cable companies Rogers, Shaw and Videotron do not offer unlimited plans and Bell suggested those offered by smaller service providers were congesting its networks.

Nearly 360 000 Canadians signed an online petition calling for the decision to be overturned, fearing it could lead to higher prices as consumers download more and more data such as high resolution movies or play games online.

Earlier CRTC chair Konrad von Finckenstein defended the ruling, telling a parliamentary committee: "Ordinary internet users should not be made to pay for the bandwidth consumed by heavy users."

He noted that a very small percentage of consumers are heavy internet users.

According to the CRTC's Communications Monitoring Report, Canadians used on average 15.4 gigabits per month in 2009.

Likening the internet to a public utility, von Finckenstein added the CRTC's view remained "that usage-based billing is a legitimate principle for pricing internet services".

Bandwidth capacity

Clement told reporters he felt the CRTC's ruling "would have a huge impact on consumers and would hurt small businesses, would hurt innovators and creators".

He said he understands that bandwidth capacity is a problem, but usage-based billing "is the wrong way to do it".

Little correction. Axxess prepaid is R70, Afrihost currently R39. But normal capped is cheaper from Axxess (R19 vs R29).

That price of R49/GB for a prepaid account is what Afrihost might introduce if you want to pay by EFT or Direct Deposit instead of Debit Order/Credit Card, The quote is extracted verbatim from a email sent to me by Zoe of Afrihost Client Services.

All current Afrihost pricing is for payment by Debit Order/Credit Card only - unlike Axxess, Telkom and, it would seem, Openweb.
