Afrihost MTN Fixed LTE-A Thread

Sometimes the tower just drops the signal altogether and the router connects to another, outside the "range" allowed by the MTN system and it then suspends the service. Customer then needs to request it be unlocked to get it back up... which can take up to 2 hours for MTNs system to process it. I am sure they can make the process faster, but it's MTN we are talking about here.
Nope. I had random disconnects every single day. It would last about a minute or so each time.
I'd monitor the connection and it would "hunt" between weak and strong towers/cells.
Just had to cancel.

I have just received my afrihost uncapped fixed LTE but have been having issues with console gaming, playing genshin impact I get constant reconnecting like it drops off the server and reconnects, ping in game is showing 208 but then I reconnect and it shows up to 600. No issues when I play the first Descendant or streaming.

every night it's like this

Is anyone else experiencing issues with packet loss during peak hours? Between around 5 - 10pm packet loss goes from 0% to about 20% which makes for a fairly unpleasant experience. This happens on my MTN pure LTE package, my afrihost airmobile and also my girlfriend's airmobile sim card as well. If i use a regular MTN sim or a MegsApp sim there is no packet loss at all.

The LTE/5G network stack handles packet re-transmissions so there shouldn't really ever be any packet loss at all. if i do a traceroute the packet-loss happens at one of the hops where traffic seems to be handed over from MTN's network to Afrihost so perhaps one of their routers/switches is at capacity and dropping packets during peak times?

I've seen another use complain as well so it doesn't seem like it's only isolated to me: https://mybroadband.co.za/forum/thr...loss-during-peak-hours.1296825/#post-33236829

I gave up on this, I have the same problem with packet loss on the network from afrihost uncapped mobile

Yeah, it's surprising that such a wide reaching and obvious problem could even persist for so long. I noticed this first back in June with airmobile.

@Afrigirl @AfriNatic There's obviously something wrong with the way your setup is with MTN because this doesn't happen when using native MTN sim cards or any of the other MVNO operators.

It’s not even just packet loss it’s poor speeds , upload higher than download high latency etc

I mean I get like 10mbps down and 50up on a 5G connection

Checked around today and saw the 50mbit for R399. Seemed like a deal. Then saw the fine print (literally in a much smaller font) on a drop-down tab you must click:

"Subject to a monthly threshold of 150GB. Once you’ve reached your monthly data limit, your connection speed will be limited to 4Mbps for the remainder of the month."

Crazy. That's about 2 "AAA" game downloads then you are stuck in 2006 for the rest of the month.

Yep the AWESOME deals of 2024, very little progress made, despite all the bullshit advertising.

Is there a way to reach out to any Afrihost reps on the forum? Been trying but no luck. Trying to get 2 LTE packages. I used to know them as quick in responding and clarifying matters. Don't know if this has changed.

Once again, speeds are worse than 3G

This is the uncapped 5G

Hi

Please can you send Afrigirl and myself a dm once you experience the issue so we can run a few tests to test.

I've found that MTN throttle the Afrihost 5g - Can't get more than 30Mbps down. Cell C 4g on the same tower gets over 100. Also same issues in peak times.
