Are Win10 updates set to low priority? Stuck on 0% for quite a while now.
Force Windows Defender to update. I've found that it stopped my updates from time to time. :)

There is at least one Windows Defender update every 24 yours, sometimes 2.
Windows defender updates DO impact on ALL other online activities, so much so that the LAN/ Internet interface sometimes fails. A PC reboot hardly ever fixes this issue. An Adsl router/modem reboot is required to unlock the mess.

Really has nothing to do with the ISP prioritizing anything.

Best to shut down ALL other activity on a PC, then complete the Windows Defender update on its own and then reboot the PC.

Some good advice. Windows Defender demons :(

I have a Windows defender update pending right now. I know from bitter experience that what I need to do now is terminate all Internet access while this update completes.

Win 10 Pro users are able to "partially control" the update processes, but it seems not users of WIN 10 Home. I have set WIN 10 updates to "notify me when available and notify me to install". I have disabled ALL auto Universal App updates, but still having issues with Xbox updates.

It isn't necessary to terminate the update process. Open Defender and click the update button. Hope it helps. :)

I have not tried to update Windows Defender Definitions that way ... Will see if it makes a difference tomorrow. As to what happened today .... The update via the settings option did disable the router as it has been doing in the past.

Just install free Avast, it's just as good and should disable Windows Defender (not good to have multiple anti-virus software running at the same time, once had two of them thinking the other one was the virus, system slowed to crawl while they kept stealing each other's virus chest). Just be sure after install, it should update, go to uninstall programs, hit modify avast and remove the safezone browzer. There are some others I wouldn't install at install, just can't remember them all.

Googled it, I installed only:
Left column:
File shield
Web shield
Mail Shield

Middle column:
none of them

right column:
none of them

they're all extras you don't need.

After you're done with install, go to settings, in general tick silent/gaming mode, untick enable avast email signature (it inserts "scanned by avast" or something like that for all your mails). You can also untick the things under privacy if you feel like it. Registration is also free, you can come up with a bogus mail if you feel like it. (I don't receive spam from them, just an occasional e-mail reminding me registration is expiring on some PCs, you can reuse e-mails as often as you like.)

Off Topic so maybe we should terminate this discussion now? I only raised the issue to show that the Windows updates are not related to anything Afrihost was doing ....

Thanks for the suggestion, but I am already subscribed to Norton, as I have been for more than 12 years....

At the moment, I am not running Norton, because I am busy analysing the update issue with Windows Defender.

And yes, I only run Norton or Window Defender not both

Odd how I posted about speed issues on Friday, sent the results to Critical Care and never got any feedback. So I still sit with an account that will not behave correctly on Afrihost, where it runs correctly on other ISP's test accounts

Sorry to hear our team hasn't been in touch, there's usually quite a backlog to run through on Mondays - I'm sure you'll have news soon.
From our discussion last week it looked like line issues though?

Have you tested another account thoroughly, leaving it on your router for a day or two?

My test accounts are only 1GB, so that's not enough for me to keep on the router for a few days, beta testing consumes vast amounts of data

Could you maybe swap accounts with a friend for a while?

Not many will allow you to use their account, Afrihost needs to sort this out. I have submitted all the tests I was asked to do, and was told my account was optimised and then the speed dropped to less than half on Friday. Odd thing is the Afrihost free account seems to have less issues than my business account, so I still think its not a line issues, I have had Telkom do many tests and they claim no issues.

As you saw last week though, switching between accounts isn't proving a stable testing environment.
I'm sure our Critical Care team can arrange a test account for you, drop them a mail :)

Not as far as I know. We generally want to prioritise OS updates because of the critical nature, but as far as I know we don't treat them differently to other non-realtime services

Fixed, I must have set updates to be disabled before i left for the states.

Well if I switch to a different isp the account is stable, unless I am not understanding you correctly. I have updated my support ticket on Friday, but have never got a response.
