One second I see 16ms latency to Durban, the next over 80ms. On the third hop for me, switching to another ISP and all is well.

That's odd, as far as I know we only started peering at NapAfrica when we moved over to our new network late last year.
Maybe I need to get a better idea of what you are pointing to. Can you mail me the results you are comparing on [email protected]?

This looks very bad./Snip

im convinced your torrents are shaped ... always horrendous speeds
Exact same speeds 30kbps...The last week I am having the same problem. Was sent to Telkom from the Afrihost side. Contacted Telkom and they see no issues. Line became better and speedtest is fine and everything works fine except all torrents are downloading at 20-30kb
So last Satturday my line whent dead and I reported it,, on Thursday a Telkom tech came to my house and fixed it, well done to Telkom techs for coming out on a public holliday, the problem was someware between the pole in my yard and the next one up the street.
I was about to go away for the long weekend on Thursday when the tech came and was kind of in a hurry. After he fixed it I just listened for a dial tone on the phone and quickly looked whether the modem syncs, then he left and I was also out the door.
I came home just now and I'm seeing some reduced speeds.
Before the line broke my modem showed current rate around 0.9 MB up and 8 MB down, and it showed max rate around 1.2 up and 8.7 down.
Now it shows current as 0.5 MB up and 6.3 MB down, and max rate as 1 MB up and 9.2 MB down.
SNR was previously always around 6 dB both up and down, now SNR sits at 19 up and 6 down.
So seams my SNR improved from 6 to 19 dB after the fix or doesn't the upstream SNR really matter?
Also, why don't I get close to the actual speeds I got before, especially upload is concerning, it's half the speed it was before. Why do I get much lower current speeds even though my router shows much higher max speeds?
BTW I'm on a 10 MB line, surely this can't be ASSIA yet?
Who is managing your line? Telkom or Afrihost?Good morning Afris
Last night my line was feeling a tad slow but I ignored it and went to bed. This morning I checked and the line was syncing at 1Mbps (I have a 4meg line). Who do I need to PM to get this sorted?
Who is managing your line? Telkom or Afrihost?
I tried now with an IS based account. Not much difference. I knew and know its our exchange which is wasted.
Even the telkom techies know it. It appears regional telkom management doesnt care and is waiting around for their pension, doing the bare minimum work wise.
So AfriMan dont worry. Nothing and no one can save us in Harties.
So I have no Internet, I requested a line upgrade on Wednesday. I don't know if it's related??
Having constant ping spikes in the evenings around 19:30 onward on my Afrihost account. No problems on Telkom.

My reference to mweb's and optinet's networks is related to the general poor performance everyone gets when anything is routed over their networks not in relation to when Afrihost started peering at napafrica.
What is much more interesting is why afrihost customers get such vastly varying results depending on where in the country they are.
(1) For example, if I was to do a trace route from my exchange ( Die Wilgers in PTA) I get a 9ms response to bras.afrihost.com, yet in other parts of the country, other gets results that seem to never be better than 32-34 ms and worse.
(2) Why do I get 13-14ms when tracing to afrihost.com (190.93.242.183) and others never get better than 32 - 34 ms (and they seem to end up on 41.86.112.68)?
(3) Why do we all get 32-34ms or worse when tracing to afrihost.co.za? Surely afrihost.co.za (41.86.112.68) should resolve to the same IP address as afrihost.com?
(4) If afrihost peers with others' at napafrica at Teraco in JHB, why not elsewhere in the country also?
(5) Why do afrihost customers show such varying results depending on where in the country are, and, why, if one takes the results I see in the Wilgers exchange area of 9 ms to your Bras server, does my friend in the exact same exchange area experience such poor results, which have consistently been blamed on "exchange congestion"?
All traces that involve afrihost.co.za end up going via mweb's and optinet's networks. Both of these networks consistently show erratic performance when benchmarking their DNS servers. Hardly ever do both networks DNS servers ever show no packet loss .....
From my side whenever a trace route involves these two networks there is a consistent 22 ms extra latency involved at best, and much worse during high traffic periods. It does not matter which websites are involved, if the routing is via the above networks, performance is bad, so why does Afrihost route anything via these networks?
