Afrihost New Network Feedback - Part 2

Cancelled service and moving on

The support from Afrihost in an email this morning starts off by telling me that EvE online has 2 primary servers , and the rest are backups , well then I just laughed and made the decision to move elsewhere.
I don't expect any or every support staff to know the ins and outs of every game server , I don't know the 1st thing about the WoW servers for example , but to confidently state your ignorance as fact , well that's something else.

Played all last night on the CrystalWeb trial account , not a glitch , no packet loss at all. Despite it being 10 mb account on my 40 FttH it was smooth.

Kudos to the consultant who helped me on the phone to end my service , he gave me the real service I was expecting from the rest of Afrihost.
As I currently have 500 GB data , account will only expire end August , which again is a nice touch, but not much use if I keep on getting a disconnect.

:(

I'm really sorry about that Dude. Definitely not the sort of experience that we want our Clients to have. I know it probably won't change your mind, but most of our Dev Team are avid Eve Online players, I'll check with them if they've had an issues and we can maybe figure out what's going on.

You're using the default DNS for your Afrihost account at the moment right?

How do other video streaming services compare?
Yes auto assigned 169.1.1.4 & 169.1.1.10
Test on IS and Mweb both play smoothly and buffers way ahead of play time.
Afrihost Facebook videos battle.

The only thing that I can think of that could be different is the routing that we are using, would you mind maybe running a traceroute to Facebook.com using your Afrihost and Mweb / IS accounts?

Thanks!

I'll get these results to our Team ASAP to have a look at, definitely looks like there is some room for improvement.

Don't see any DNS issues on my side, but I have tested the ping theory, my ping has almost doubled, on a CPT TS3 server. Where I usually had 40/41ms it now spikes between 60 and 80ms
I have tested on Getflix DNS (my primary DNS) and changed over to Afrihost DNS for testing, no difference

Which Team Speak server are you using? Could you maybe post a traceroute to it?

Appears to be fine now, see test below its a Gameservers TS. Also rebooted my router before testing, so I guess that fixed the issue. Also note its routing via MWEB napafrica and optinet, don't know if MWEB has issues with their CDN's:confused:

Thanks for the update!

We've been seeing some strange issues pop up now and again with the routing over Optinet, this is definitely something we are looking into.

I logged a issue with telkom about my line dropping earlier the week, telkom tech phones me and says he will drop my line to 19Mbs to improve SNR ratio, this is my line since then :/

I have already logged another fault, I'm not sure they know what they themselves are doing.

Sheesh man, I hope Telkom can get you sorted out ASAP!

Drop me a PM if you want me to see what I can do.

Why don't you try switching to VDSL? Check if it's available line stats improve so much on VDSL.

Looking at your Jitter and ping, I suspect ASSIA (if your line is on ASSIA) detected a line fault and dropped your line speed to stabilize it. What you have here could be crosstalk or high noise on one of the copper cables you are connected to. You might wanna ask telkom to investigate further and do proper testing. I had a similar experience, took a while to fix it.

Thanks, I have logged yet another fault this morning as they just close them without anything being done, I know the technicians work on weekends but no one at the call center so now I wait.

At least the jitter is gone:

Yeah it sucks, thats why I made a few friends in the tech department. Does tend to speed up the process a bit. Good luck!

According to the AH website:

"Our intention is not to shape*Business Uncapped*packages, however shaping can be applied during times of network congestion. When applied, only non-realtime, non-interactive services will be affected by shaping, to offer the best possible experience to users when network resources are strained."

AND

"5.*Uncapped Monthly Thresholds, Throttling, Shaping and Bandwidth Priority

5.1Home Uncapped packages have a threshold (based on a 30 day rolling window) after which speeds could be subject to shaping and throttling based on network demand. Premium and Business Uncapped packages may also be subject to shaping when demand on the network is high. Our aim is to apply as little (or no) shaping or throttling to our Uncapped accounts, where network resources allow. In the case of increases in demand, throttling and shaping will be applied to Home Uncapped accounts first, then shaping to Premium Uncapped accounts. Shaping will only be applied to Business Uncapped accounts in cases of extreme network congestion.

5.2Home Uncapped packages are subject to throttling should a user have reached their monthly threshold and our network is under strain. Premium Uncapped packages are not subject to throttling or monthly thresholds, and will enjoy full speed real-time services under all normal circumstances, but may be subject to shaping of downloads should the network be under strain. Business Uncapped packages are not generally shaped, but can be subject to shaping, should the network experience high levels of demand. Business Uncapped accounts also have a user controllable feature via ClientZone to prioritise non-P2P traffic on their account to ensure business-critical services always get the highest priority."

When did this happen ie Business Accounts being shaped? This is not what it said when I signed up.

The part Rickster quoted in the link below is what it said when I signed up:
