Afrihost New Network Feedback - Part 2

+1 The IPC prices drops meant 1 of 2 things for ISPs.... Drop prices at same performance levels or keep prices the same and get more capacity.

If memory serves me right neither happened at afrihost. There was no price reduction and by the looks of things capacity wasn't increased too. These symptoms of high latency means just 1 thing. Shortage of capacity. It only happens during evening peak so yeah capacity issues.

All that happed was the conditions of the business uncapped accounts got changed, so now they can be shaped, and every night for the past 8 months from 19:00 to 21:00 my download tank, and its not only p2p downloads. I had enough and cancelled on Friday, and I think Afrihost don't really bother if clients leave as more suckers seems to come along and replace us. Stranger business model, and even worse company management. Such a shame as you said the client zone is world class pity it hides the real truth about what is really happening. I am sad to leave, had high hopes after the network upgrade, the promises that clients would be looked after, but business account holders never got a thing extra. I have informed all my colleagues to stay clear of Afrihost, and remember an unhappy client talks a lot.

You are right from one side.
From another side please then explain the next:
webpage with the videoclip downloading from one ISP at 50Kps and with the same line, hard/software 600Kps under the management of another ISP. All this NOW - network is not busy.
So "faster" is working for the some cases.

Hope I can stay connected long enough to type this.

So you are saying you use ISP one - and use Telkom infrastructure (Telkom ADSL line and Exchange) you get high speed.
And if you use AfriH - and using the same Telkom infrastructure (Telkom ADSL line and Exchange) - you get snail speed?

Naturally your line will be limited to the maximum your local Telkom exchange can offer any ADSL line - and that you can check with Telkom's ADSL checker, using your phone line number

Our area max speed available is 10Mbps on Telkom copper - but I'm not getting near to 1Mbps even anyway. And I'm paying for FAR more.... :(

No point in buying more "expectancy" at higher pricing and not getting it anyway is there? You have to be a numb nut to go there.

Read Telkom's T&C - no point in upgrading anything....as the current Telkom infrastructure doesn't even provide the speed it should.
Please note: The provision of Telkom's ADSL service is subject to network availability, distance, copper quality and line sync speed limitations. ADSL is a best-effort service.

I did a test with Telkom ISP account also - using Telkom login - makes no difference to speed between hops.

So I expect there are some massive bandwidth hogs in our area - using up the exchange's max capacity...and the rest of us DSL chaps become "bottom feeders."

League of Legends with a AFrihost and Axxess account gives 400ms in EUW. So I think it's French servers and it's a disaster can't play at ALL.

Clear as daylight they have congestion issues!

Changing ISP wont fix over congested infrastructure - I'll just be paying more money into Telkom's problem...to another ISP monthly...so no point in upgrading this account to anything "faster" either - If I cannot even get consistent speeds I am meant to be getting on the current account.

The only thing that will be "FASTER" will be the name of the account on the invoice.

The ISPs don't own the exchanges or the DSLAMS...Telkom does.

Not the point kohlhtor was making. He's just saying AH is slow.

Tested it again early this morning

Clearly congestion at exchange or there is throttling during peak times, my type of account on that router is not meant to be throttled at all - this morning suddenly all is well.

Over past few years anything Steam driven played via Afrihost ISP and our exchange is impossible to play on-line - you get kicked by host because your PtP connection is causing lag across the game sessions.

Packet loss on router.

I think the more people start using streaming in your area for CCTV and for products like Netflix and their SA counterpart - the more things will fall over at exchanges that cannot cope with the demand on its infrastructure and that will only change when Telkom upgrades their exchanges.

There is no point in upgrading any ISP account if the infrastructure is the REAL bottleneck - The ISPs don;t own the Telkom infrastructure that uses Telkom exchanges to connect tot the net. And that is the bottom line.

Throwing more money into a "faster" account with your ISP will just frustrate you more and your bank balance more - if your current account cannot even function at maximum promised performance. ;)

You're just throwing more money at the same problem.

0% packet loss early this morning. Yesterday 100% Congestion causes that - its new hardware and ethernet cabling at the site so that's not the problem.

Okay cool, yes, I've also seen routers do funny things when there are line problems.

I just opened a line fault as all my stats decreased substantially.
Code:
Time connected	00Days 00hrs 03min 43sec
Modulation type	G.992.5-A
Actual rate (up)	1020 kbps
Actual rate (down)	8316 kbps
Data transfered (sent)	0 kB
Data transfered (received)	0 kB
Output power (up)	12 dBm
Output power (downstream)	19.5 dBm
Line attenuation (up)	23 dBm
Line attenuation (downstream)	42.1 dB
Noise margin (up)	6.5 dB
Noise margin (downstream)	7.8 dB
Had a 10Mbps sync, 9dB downstream about three hours ago.
Afrihost support guy, when I started talking with him, said "have you done a speedtest". I was flabbergasted as I'm talking about line stats, specifically I said "My line's downstream sync is at 8Mbps instead of the 10Mbps I had two hours ago, my SNR has alos worsened". Then went on about ASSIA being rolled out and stuff. I did interrupt him and kind of berated him, sorry but was annoyed. If I am talking about line stats and my line stats worsened, it's not ASSIA. ASSIA would just try to keep it stable at 6dB Noise Margin or above, when I stated it lowered the sync from 10Mbps down and 9dB SNR to 8Mbps down and 6dB SNR, it should immediately click that it's not ASSIA.

I'm betting on a Telkom tech being lazy and has swapped out the ports with someone else who has an issue, all my line faults so far have been port issues.

EDIT:
View attachment 383367
All the voice part of the telephones in TV were down yesterday as well.

Have we logged a fault with Telkom for you? Those line stats do suspiciously look like someone swapped ports with you...

Gaming was impossible this afternoon had to switch to Telkom, seriously considering downgrading my account. Afrihost has been very disappointing recently.

:(

Which games have you been having problems with?

Cape Town East - Corline has been digging open lines in our area over the past 3 days - they closed up the hole they dug yesterday - but now our internet is totally buggered again.

Telkom downplays ADSL exchange congestion concerns
Telkom says that it continuously monitors its DSLAM backhaul with regards to potential congestion, and takes action if problems are detected

:(

That definitely looks like something was damaged on your line or the Exchange itself. Do we manage your DSL line? We'll definitely need to get Telkom out there to have a look.

Latency and download speed very up and down this afternoon.
Speed tests obviously full speed. They must be shaping the sh*t out of our business accounts again.

From what I can see there wasn't any shaping on the Uncapped accounts and definitely not the Business Uncapped accounts on Saturday. Looking at the traceroutes it's those Optinet hops that are flaring up again. :(

Which services weren't performing great for you?

League of Legends with a AFrihost and Axxess account gives 400ms in EUW. So I think it's French servers and it's a disaster can't play at ALL.

Clear as daylight they have congestion issues!

Your latency to Europe should be around 200ms to 240ms in most instances. If you're consistently getting 400ms we need to look into this ASAP.

Hi AH I'm a little confused as to what's going on with streaming

I tried watching a stream on YouTube gaming to see the performance on my end as they have servers closer to home as an alternative to Twitch, I was getting lag and buffering issues. Just thought this was strange and maybe you could expand on this

Here are some test results

Youtube in HD should be smooth on any DSL line 4Mbps and above. I know we ask this all the time, but which DNS servers are you using at the moment?
