Afrihost New Network Feedback - Part 2

Always best not to bundle your line and data package, it costs a bit more to keep them separate but well worth it in the end. Well, this is my last month with AH. The final straw for me not informing business clients of the shaping policy, seems a bit underhanded. Farewell AH, I'm going to the competitor....

:(

I'm really sorry to see you go. It's never cool to see a Client a leave.

Hi @Afrigenie I am going backwards and forwards on an issue which seems a bit weird and I am hoping you can help. My current line speed is at 4mb and I am looking to upgrade to either an 8mb if possible or 6mb. according to Telkom and or Afrihost,

I quote: "The upgrade failed. Error message was,"The speed selected ( 8192 ) is currently not supported in the DP where the end user is situated. The max speed in the DP is ( 2048 ) therefore please select a lower speed."

Please find attached

Please advise on a way forward for me.
Thanks

It could be that infrastructure in your area doesn't support a speed profile higher than 4Mbps, or you could be too far from the Exchange.

Could you drop me a PM with your line number and I'll check what's going on.

:(

That definitely looks like something was damaged on your line or the Exchange itself. Do we manage your DSL line? We'll definitely need to get Telkom out there to have a look.

Hi

I reported a DSL line fault with Telkom also.

But I am starting to see a trend - as I keep a log of all these faults. With the tracert logs etc. I'm not sure Fibre to Home will solve anything other than perhaps even cause MORE congestion at the exchanges. Because the more people switch to fibre - the more bandwidth the exchange will need to manage in total. Demand vs supply.

Unless they can manage more bandwidth through the fibre they actually install to an exchange and plug the copper ADSL accounts into a fibre network from the exchange onward.

Essentially I should be getting below 20ms per hop due to proximity to exchange - that is not happening consistently - but it does happen from time to time (and then all is good) - which means there is nothing wrong with the link between the site and the exchange.

As mentioned Corline is digging up things in our area so -maybe that "relief" will come - and we will see for the 1st in many years - ADSL actually maintaining advertised speeds. Lets hope. But for now I'm not going to upgrade any account until the current account does not perform consistently as advertised.

FTTH won't run through the ADSL Exchanges, so congestion shouldn't be an issue at all. If your Exchange is congested, it definitely isn't worth upgrading, that being said, if you're seeing latencies of 800ms that it more than likely an actual problem is affecting you as opposed to it being congestion.

If the latency was 1000ms or 800ms all the time - yes - but its not that bad all the time - so as I said I'm starting to see a trend. And my conclusion is that its related to demand on the exchange by DSL users in that area.

I've seen exact same problems with other DSL users in a 15km radius from that site. All DSL users regardless of ISP.

If DSL can manage hops of 10-20ms per hop - then that shows what its CAPABILITY is when its working well. And then I mean from the router - to the exchange to one of your DNS servers. So the last mile has the capacity...when the exchange is not falling over.

And as for now - Fibre is not an option in that area YET.

But I'm sure Telkom MSANs (multi-service access node) at exchanges will manage their fibre throughput also. And not just the DSL copper.

From what I can see there wasn't any shaping on the Uncapped accounts and definitely not the Business Uncapped accounts on Saturday. Looking at the traceroutes it's those Optinet hops that are flaring up again. :(

Which services weren't performing great for you?

Http downloads and P2P
The throughput was literally fluctuating up and down by the second.

These were manually configured.

Any idea as to what was going on, those test results looked perfectly fine to me.

Can you perhaps set to the DNS to automatic and see if there is any different on Youtube. We rotate DNS servers in and out as we update the routing, CDNs and caches, keeping your DNS on automatic means you'll have the most current and up to date servers giving you the best possible experience.

Genie i have a problem!!

its still a long way to go before the 1st, and my data is almost done *sigh* :D
