Afrihost New Network Feedback - Part 2

And the weekend? And last week? And before then? No thanks - Afrihost is the service provider, they are responsible. Not their *single* upstream provider whom I have nothing to do with.

It's called r-e-d-u-n-d-a-n-c-y. Something which Afrihost *clearly* never heard of before.

First it was IS, then IS wasn't good enough. Then it was MTN, then MTN wasn't good enough. Now it's Neotel, and Neotel's "not good enough." At this rate, Afrihost is going to run out of providers pretty soon. Time to take some responsibility, and stop blaming other people for your slack, AH...

Dude, just cancel. We just submitted our cancelation a few min ago. This noddy ISP is not worth the hassle. They seem to have issues more often than they don't.

I've kept my eyes on them since way back when they launched their first uncapped product and I've noticed a trend in their business operations. They undercut everyone else while delivering an inferior product. Saving myself the hassle and paying a bit more to get ADSL from a REAL provider, not this "1-2-3 now I am an ISP" providers.

When it works it works well, but it definitely doesn't work consistently - so you do need a backup account.

It is a poor reflection on the state of the Internet in South Africa that we have to provide our own redundancy but we do, regardless of the ISP. I have a Telkom account that has been a constant since I got ADSL back in 2003. I was always too scared to cancel it in case they disconnected the line too. But at least it is on the Saix Network and uses a different undersea cable and backbone than most ISP's. That alone makes it a good redundant path so I hang on to it.

Afrihosts recent specials and R1 Promo will work against them with all the issues they have had this month. I have no idea how many took up the R1 orffer but I would guess it was in the hundreds, will they stay? probably not, will they remember testing Afrihost and being disappointed, definately.

But in my case, and this may suit others out there, I am going to stay for now. I downgraded my R1 account from 200GB to 20GB, @ R29 a month it wont break the bank. The 18 hours Free Time - think unshaped uncapped - will continue till at least the end of November, I will use the Telkom account form 6PM to Midnight, and the Double bandwidth till the year end. Both may be renewed or canceled. If renewed the win continues if canceled the Afrihost account becomes my redundant path now that Telkom are also giving me 100GB a month.

Before you cancel, way up the options, and if they don't improve you can walk before the 24th of any month at the click of a button, other ISP's demand a full calendar month written notice and non of them are providing a reliable 24/7 experience anyway.

Cheers
Chris

Gave their R1 special a go and sadly have to agree.

When a capped account on a 20MB/s line fails to outperform a 10Mb/s uncapped account (CrystalWeb premium) that just looks bad.

Netflix: lower quality - takes several seconds to start
Browsing: notably slower
Downloading: Faster after hours - about the same during peak hours (but was expecting to get more than 8Mb/s on a 20Mb/s line with a capped account!)
Youtube: not bad but buffers a on the odd occasion whereas the uncapped account never does

And I pull about 450Gb a month so do see a bit of shaping (with downloads during peak).

Sorry Afrihost - not this time. At least you keep trying new stuff and for that reason I'll may trail you again in the future.

I fully agree with you, Afrihost performance is not great but their prices are very competitive at the moment. From next month i will be using the 20 + 20 as a redundancy account and i think its very good for that. Its not to be relied on as a main account.

Wow... That's not a great experience. Which DNS servers were you using if you don't mind me asking? You shouldn't have been seeing any buffering on Youtube or Netflix with a 20Mbps line.

I see Lara came to the rescue.
Yeh.. Before i go out and buy one, ill test and see with the one Lara can provide. Im never sure with these technicians, because with my existing router i can still stream okay and browse okay. My only issue is, that im not hitting acceptable speeds for a 20mbps line, in fact im only getting around 4mbps. :(

Yea, I always take what they say with a pinch of salt.

Although, you did say you got better speeds with his modem compared to yours, but that could be because you're recreating the port and the better speeds are only temporary, in which case you'll need that other modem to test for longer.

Yeh, cant really take them 100% seriously at times..

Yep will wait on Lara, then have a notjer crack. If that doesn't solve it, then ill re log the fault, which is such a pain in the behind

How can you be sure if that loan router isnt as bad as yours?

I haven't been able to watch Hulu using Unotelly and browsing has been attrocious these last 2 weeks :( used to be perfect. What's happening? Why have a 40mb line that only runs like a 2mb line? HD is useless

True, i cant. But according to tecchie, i need to replace mine. So process of elimination. If that doesnt solve it, then again, there must be an issue on the Line somewhere. But these technicians seem lazy at times, and dont want to put in the hard graft.

If yours is less than two years old you can exchange it at telkom. Assuming its telkom branded.

What sort of speeds have you been getting on your downloads and speedtest.net?
